Alibaba's AI Chatbot Overloaded, Halts Coupon Distribution During Major Campaign
Alibaba's artificial intelligence chatbot, Qwen, has been forced to temporarily suspend its coupon distribution service due to an overwhelming surge in user demand. This technical setback has disrupted a significant new campaign designed to showcase the chatbot's advanced shopping capabilities beyond simple question-answering functions.
Massive User Response Overwhelms System
The initiative, which began on Friday, allowed users to obtain coupons for in-app purchases directly through chatbot prompts on Alibaba-owned retail platforms. This marked the first phase of an ambitious 3-billion-yuan ($433 million) plan to attract more users during China's annual Spring Festival holiday period.
The response was immediate and massive, with Alibaba reporting that 10 million orders were placed within just the first nine hours of the campaign launch. By Sunday, the system had become so overloaded that Qwen announced on its official Weibo channel that it needed a break and pleaded for user patience.
Technical Difficulties in Agentic AI Strategy
This rollout is part of what Alibaba calls its "Agentic AI strategy," which aims to transform Qwen into a comprehensive one-stop shopping platform. The vision allows users to access Alibaba's various apps directly through the chatbot and complete payments seamlessly, similar to how Google integrates its Gemini chatbot into applications like Maps.
However, the ambitious strategy has encountered significant technical hurdles since the coupon giveaway began. Reuters checks on Monday revealed that repeated purchase prompts generated various versions of refusal messages, all citing user oversubscription as the primary issue.
Company Response and User Communication
In one response to a purchase attempt on Monday, Qwen explained: "Everyone's enthusiasm for experiencing AI shopping is too high! Currently there are too many participants in 'Qwen free order', we are working tirelessly to maintain the campaign's experience."
The chatbot provided reassurance to affected shoppers, confirming that previously issued coupons would remain valid and redeemable until February 28. This gives users additional time to utilize their coupons once the technical issues are resolved. Alibaba has declined to provide further comment on the specific nature of the technical difficulties.
Broader AI Product Announcements
Despite these challenges, Alibaba continues to advance its artificial intelligence offerings. On Wednesday, the company unveiled several other AI products, including Qwen3-Omni, described as a multimodal, immersive system particularly useful for virtual and artificial reality applications such as smart glasses and intelligent cockpits.
The temporary suspension of coupon distribution highlights both the tremendous consumer interest in AI-powered shopping experiences and the technical challenges that emerge when implementing such ambitious digital transformations at scale.
