AI Model to Identify Stray Cattle and Owners in Ahmedabad
The Gujarat government is launching an innovative project to tackle traffic problems caused by stray cattle in Ahmedabad. They are developing an Artificial Intelligence model that will identify these animals and their owners in real time.
How the AI System Works
This AI solution relies on computer vision and deep-learning technology. It scans the faces of cows using images from CCTV cameras installed across the city.
The key identification feature is the cow's nose pattern. Government authorities explain that each cow's nose design is unique, much like a human fingerprint. The AI will analyze this pattern along with any stains or marks on the cow's eyes and face.
Once scanned, the system matches the cow against a database and retrieves the owner's details. This process aims to be faster and more efficient than current methods.
Current Challenges and New Solutions
Currently, Ahmedabad faces significant issues with stray cattle on roads. The municipal corporation manages about 1.1 lakh cows that have RFID tags and microchips. Cameras at 130 city junctions photograph stray cows, but identification remains a manual task.
This manual process consumes considerable time and energy. The new AI model promises to automate identification, helping resolve traffic disruptions more quickly.
Pilot Project and Future Goals
The recently opened AI Centre of Excellence in Gandhinagar's GIFT City has entrusted an agency with developing this model. The agency has proposed solutions using deep-learning and will present them to a steering committee soon.
If effective, this system could enhance public safety by preventing accidents caused by stray cattle. It also aims to establish a data-based monitoring system for better governance.
A government official stated that the state prioritizes using modern technology to make cities smarter. This pilot project in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation area represents a step toward integrating AI into citizen services.
The initiative reflects Gujarat's commitment to technological innovation in urban management. By leveraging AI, authorities hope to create safer, more efficient city environments for residents.
