Maharashtra Government Greenlights Advanced AI Surveillance Network for Pimpri-Chinchwad

A high-powered committee of the Maharashtra State Government has granted approval for a comprehensive Artificial Intelligence-enabled CCTV surveillance project covering the entire jurisdiction of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Police Commissionerate. This significant development represents a major technological upgrade for law enforcement in one of Maharashtra's most rapidly expanding urban and industrial regions.

Strategic Focus on Critical Locations

The ambitious surveillance initiative will concentrate on monitoring sensitive areas including industrial clusters, IT zones, and key pilgrimage centers. Specific locations targeted for enhanced coverage include:

  • Industrial Zones: Chakan MIDC, Talegaon MIDC, and Bhosari MIDC manufacturing hubs
  • Technology Hub: Hinjewadi IT park with its high-density traffic patterns
  • Religious Centers: Dehu and Alandi pilgrimage sites that attract lakhs of devotees during festivals

This focused approach aims to address unique security challenges in each type of location, from workforce movement in industrial areas to crowd management during religious processions.

Integration with Existing Infrastructure

The project will create a centralized surveillance network by integrating existing CCTV cameras installed under both the Pimpri-Chinchwad Smart City Mission and the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation. According to Police Commissioner Vinoy Kumar Choubey, this integration will expand coverage to previously unmonitored critical locations while optimizing existing resources.

"Building on our strengthened infrastructure foundation, this project aims to create a unified surveillance network across the commissionerate," Commissioner Choubey explained.

Advanced AI Capabilities and Command Structure

The surveillance system will feature sophisticated AI-enabled video analytics designed to support multiple law enforcement functions:

  1. Real-time crime detection and investigation support
  2. Automated traffic enforcement and regulation
  3. Intelligent crowd monitoring and analysis
  4. Enhanced emergency response coordination

A modern Integrated Command and Control Centre will be established at the newly constructed Commissioner of Police office, with live video feeds accessible to zonal Deputy Commissioners of Police, traffic authorities, and individual police stations. This centralized access is expected to enable faster decision-making and coordinated responses to incidents.

Infrastructure Expansion Context

The surveillance project approval comes amid significant infrastructure expansion within the relatively new Pimpri-Chinchwad Police Commissionerate, which was established in 2018. Recent developments include:

  • Establishment of six new police stations
  • Creation of ten Assistant Commissioner of Police positions
  • Addition of five Deputy Commissioner of Police posts
  • Construction of new police buildings and facilities

This expansion represents the police force's response to rapid urbanization and population growth in the region, with the AI surveillance project serving as the technological cornerstone of these modernization efforts.

Implementation Timeline and Governance

A Project Implementation Committee has been formed under the chairmanship of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Police Commissioner, with senior stakeholders from multiple agencies including:

  • Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation
  • Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority
  • Smart City authorities
  • Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation
  • Police department representatives

This committee will oversee consultant selection and project implementation. Officials indicate that a consultant will be appointed shortly, with a Request for Proposal expected within the next two to three months, marking the beginning of the project's execution phase.

The approval from the High Power Committee, chaired by the Additional Chief Secretary (Home) of Maharashtra, represents a significant commitment to technology-driven policing initiatives that aim to strengthen law enforcement capabilities in crime prevention, traffic regulation, and disaster management throughout the Pimpri-Chinchwad region.
