22-Year-Old Indian-Origin Surya Midha Becomes Billionaire Faster Than Zuckerberg

When it comes to success, everyone forges their own path. For some it may take years of institutional training and work experience, for others the sheer will to realise an idea is enough. One such exemplary enigma is Surya Midha, a 22-year-old Indian-origin individual who became one of the world's richest self-made billionaires, faster than Meta giant Mark Zuckerberg, who debuted on the list at the age of 23 in 2008.

Who is Surya Midha?

While most people in their 20s are figuring out what they want in life, Surya Midha not only realised what it was, but also followed it diligently to succeed in it. What makes his rise stand out is not the age or wealth, but rather that his success comes from a fast-growing field of artificial intelligence being built in Silicon Valley's latest tech wave.

Midha was recently featured in Forbes' 2026 billionaire list and has an estimated net worth of around $2.2 billion (nearly Rs 18,000 crore), making him one of the world's youngest self-made billionaires.

He is known for co-founding Mercor along with his high school friends Brendan Foody and Adarsh Hiremath. Mercor is an AI-recruiting startup based in San Francisco that as per a Forbes report raised $350 million in funding and reached a $10 billion valuation. According to Forbes and multiple business outlets, Midha’s stake in Mercor was estimated at roughly $2.2 billion.

The trio which includes Hiremath and Midha, who are Indian-origin Americans, met at Bellarmine College Preparatory for high school. Midha, as per his own website, was born in Mountain View and raised in San Jose, California by his parents who immigrated from New Delhi to the US.

He earned a bachelor's degree in Foreign Studies at Georgetown University, where he eventually dropped out. Hiremath and Midha became the first team in history to win all three national tournaments in policy debate, with Midha being ranked as the best speaker at two of them.

What does Mercor do?

Well, as per a Forbes report, it is a platform where applicants are interviewed by an AI avatar and placed with a company looking to hire talent. While Mercor initially matched engineers in India with US companies in need of freelance coders, it has now transformed into a hope for everyone looking for the right opportunities at the right place.

Midha's rise is gaining fame because of one comparison in particular, that with Zuckerberg. While Zuckerberg became a billionaire at 23, Midha did it at 22. While the three co-founders are of the same age, Midha is younger by two months. It's an unusual story of being the son of immigrant parents, not coming from a wealthy family, forming friendships that stayed together in the midst of success and leaving college to build a startup.
