UPSC CSE 2026 Prelims on May 24: Gate Closing Time, Banned Items, Key Rules
UPSC CSE 2026 Prelims: May 24, Gate Closing, Banned Items

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) will conduct the Civil Services Preliminary Examination (CSE) 2026 on May 24, 2026, across multiple centres nationwide. The Commission has issued a strict advisory that no candidate will be permitted to enter the examination venue after the gates are closed. For the morning session, entry will cease at 9 AM, while for the afternoon session, gates will shut at 2 PM. Candidates are strongly advised to arrive at their examination centres well in advance to complete mandatory frisking and identity verification procedures.

Pre-Examination Guidelines

UPSC has directed aspirants to visit their allotted centres at least one day prior to the examination to avoid any confusion or delays on the final day. Appearing at any centre other than the one mentioned on the admit card will not be allowed under any circumstances. This rule is strictly enforced to maintain the integrity of the examination process.

Essential Items for the Exam Hall

Candidates must carry a printed copy of the e-admit card along with the original photo identity proof as specified in the admit card. Entry without these documents may lead to disqualification. Additionally, candidates should bring a black ballpoint pen, a pencil, a transparent water bottle, and passport-size photographs if required. Extra identity proof may also be demanded. The Commission has emphasised that answers marked using any pen other than a black ballpoint pen will not be evaluated. Candidates whose photographs on the admit card are unclear must bring two passport-size photographs, a valid photo identity card, and a signed undertaking for each session.

Complete Ban on Electronic Gadgets

UPSC has imposed a comprehensive ban on electronic devices inside the examination hall. Mobile phones (even in switched-off mode), smart watches, Bluetooth devices, cameras, pagers, pen drives, and any communication-enabled gadgets are strictly prohibited. Only simple wrist watches without any smart or digital communication features are permitted. The Commission has also cautioned candidates against bringing bags, valuables, or expensive items to the venue, as no responsibility will be taken for lost belongings. Many centres may lack facilities for safekeeping prohibited items.

Negative Marking and Strict Scrutiny

The Civil Services Preliminary examination will continue to apply the negative marking system for incorrect responses in both papers. Candidates are reminded that their candidature remains provisional at this stage. For candidates requiring scribes, only those issued a separate e-admit card for the scribe will be allowed to avail the facility. Candidates who have changed their name after matriculation must carry a government-issued identity proof reflecting the updated name. Failure to produce valid identification could result in denial of entry.

Admit Card Preservation and Answer Key Release

UPSC has directed aspirants to preserve their admit cards carefully until the final results of the CSE 2026 examination are declared. In a significant move aimed at improving transparency, the Commission will release provisional answer keys for the prelims examination after the exam concludes—a first in the history of the Civil Services Preliminary Examination. For lakhs of candidates vying for a place in India's administrative machinery, this examination will test not only their preparation but also discipline, precision, and composure under immense pressure.
