Roblox has appointed Sunil Rao as its Managing Director for India, making him the company's most senior representative in the country. He will join in May, with responsibilities covering local partnerships, creator ecosystem development, and aligning India's market needs with Roblox's global priorities.
Strategic Timing for India Expansion
The appointment comes at a time of significant opportunity. In 2025, Roblox creators worldwide earned over $1.5 billion, and India, with its large youth population and growing digital infrastructure, remains underpenetrated. A dedicated market lead is a logical next step for the platform.
Sunil Rao's Background and Expertise
Rao brings a solid track record in building ecosystems. He previously built developer ecosystems at Symbian, Nokia, and Google during the formative years of mobile internet. He later served as a Partner at Lightspeed Venture Partners and most recently led Strategy and Corporate Business Development for AWS across Asia-Pacific and Japan. This background gives him a mix of operational experience and understanding of how developer communities grow, which is central to Roblox's needs in India.
The platform offers free tools for coding, game design, and creation, and Rao's role will focus on helping local studios achieve commercial success using these tools.
Priorities: Child Safety and Regulatory Compliance
Rao has flagged child safety and regulatory compliance as immediate priorities. These are critical for a platform with a predominantly young user base operating in a market with an evolving regulatory framework.
Zhen Fang, Roblox's Vice President of International, stated that Rao's expertise in building operations across diverse markets made him the right fit. With this hire, Roblox is putting substantial weight behind its India ambitions.
