The Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS) in Lucknow is set to launch an online Outpatient Department (OPD) facility within the next four months, specifically designed for follow-up patients suffering from chronic diseases. This initiative is expected to benefit approximately 1,500 to 2,000 patients on a daily basis.
Background and Planning
Professor C.M. Singh, the Director of RMLIMS, stated that the institute had been planning this facility for some time. However, the existing Hospital Information System (HIS) did not have the capability to support online consultations. To address this, the institute is currently upgrading and modifying the HIS to accommodate the new online OPD services.
Initial Departments and Expansion
The online OPD will initially be implemented in four departments that cater to a large number of chronic patients requiring regular follow-ups. These departments include Medicine, Endocrinology, Cardiology, Nephrology, and Neurology. Following the successful launch, the facility will be expanded to other departments in a phased manner.
How the System Will Work
Under this new system, follow-up patients will be able to consult with doctors virtually. They will have access to digital prescriptions and medical advice through the integrated HIS platform. Additionally, doctors will be able to view patients' previous medical records, investigation reports, and treatment history online, ensuring continuity of care.

Officials believe that this facility will significantly reduce unnecessary hospital visits and alleviate overcrowding in the OPDs. This is particularly beneficial for patients who travel from distant districts, saving them time and travel expenses. The online OPD aims to streamline follow-up care for chronic conditions, making healthcare more accessible and efficient.
