Microsoft Edge Absorbs Copilot Mode, Adds Multi-Tab AI and Memory
Microsoft Edge Absorbs Copilot Mode, Adds Multi-Tab AI

Microsoft is discontinuing Copilot Mode on its Edge browser, not due to failure, but because its functionalities have been integrated directly into the browser. The company has embedded Copilot's artificial intelligence capabilities into Edge for both desktop and mobile platforms, rendering the separate mode redundant.

Multi-Tab Reasoning Now Standard

The central feature of this update is multi-tab reasoning. Users can open multiple tabs, such as a dozen hotel pages or smart TV listings, and ask Copilot to compare them. The AI extracts details from every tab and presents a clean, side-by-side breakdown without requiring users to leave the current page. Previously, this required explicitly enabling Copilot Mode. Now, it is accessible with a single click on the Copilot icon.

Enhanced Memory and Context Awareness

Edge Copilot now has access to users' browsing history and past chats. With permission, the assistant can utilize browsing history to resume research, return to previously viewed products, or complete a thread that was left unfinished. Long-term memory, enabling Copilot to reference previous conversations, is now available on both desktop and mobile platforms.

Mobile Overhaul with Vision and Voice

The mobile app has undergone a significant overhaul. Vision and Voice features, previously limited to desktop, now allow users to share their screen with Copilot and discuss what they are viewing in real time, without typing. The Journeys feature, which organizes browsing history into topic-based project cards, has also been extended to mobile.

Study Mode and Writing Assistant

For students, the new Study and Learn mode converts open webpages into guided study sessions and interactive quizzes. Users can simply type "Quiz me on this topic" into Copilot. Additionally, a Writing Assistant generates and rewrites drafts in context, and a podcast generator transforms open tabs into an audio summary that can be listened to on the go.

Conclusion of Copilot Mode

Copilot Mode originally launched in July 2025. Less than a year later, it has been fully absorbed into the browser's core functionality.
