Meta Announces Shutdown of Horizon Worlds VR App, Transitions to Mobile-Only Platform

In a significant strategic shift, Meta has declared that it will discontinue the Horizon Worlds virtual reality social network for Quest headsets, nearly five years after CEO Mark Zuckerberg heralded it as "the next frontier" for the company. This move marks a pivotal moment in Meta's metaverse ambitions, as the platform will now focus exclusively on a mobile application.

Timeline for Discontinuation and Transition

According to a community blog post, Meta will remove the Horizon Worlds app from the Quest store by the end of March 2026, with full discontinuation on VR devices scheduled for June 15, 2026. After this date, the platform will operate solely as a standalone mobile app. Meta emphasized that this separation aims to allow each platform to "grow with greater focus," streamlining the user experience across its ecosystem.

The company stated: "Earlier this year, we shared an update on our renewed focus for VR and Horizon. We are separating the two platforms so each can grow with greater focus, and the Horizon Worlds platform will become a mobile-only experience."

Background and Challenges of Horizon Worlds

Launched in late 2021, Horizon Worlds was a cornerstone of Meta's pivot to the metaverse, offering a 3D social space where avatars could interact and play games. Despite substantial investments, the platform faced persistent struggles in attracting users, never surpassing a few hundred thousand monthly active participants. Managed by Meta's Reality Labs unit, which has reported billions in quarterly losses, the division posted an operating loss of $6.02 billion in January. Subsequently, Meta cut over 1,000 employees from Reality Labs, including staff at Ouro Interactive, an in-house studio developing content for Horizon Worlds.

In September 2023, Meta introduced a mobile version of Horizon Worlds, aiming to emulate platforms like Roblox and reach users without VR headsets. This shift aligns with the company's new strategy to prioritize mobile development while continuing separate support for VR developers. Samantha Ryan, Vice President of Content at Reality Labs, explained in a February blog post: "By breaking things down into two distinct platforms, we'll be better able to clearly focus on each."

Streamlining the Quest Experience

Meta outlined specific changes to enhance the Quest experience throughout 2026:

  • Meta Horizon Worlds: By March 31, 2026, Horizon Worlds and Events will no longer appear in the Quest Store. Worlds such as Horizon Central, Events Arena, Kaiju, and Bobber Bay will be unavailable in VR. Users can access other favorite worlds in VR until June 15, 2026, after which the app will be removed from Quest, and all worlds will transition to the mobile app.
  • Meta Horizon Hyperscape Capture (Beta): By March 24, 2026, viewing Hyperscape captures will move out of Horizon Worlds. Existing captures remain viewable in the Hyperscape Capture (Beta) and Preview apps, but sharing and co-experiencing features will be discontinued.
  • Meta Horizon Plus (MH+) Perks: By March 31, 2026, Horizon-specific perks, including Meta Credits and Digital Clothing, will be removed from the subscription, though core gaming benefits and monthly games will remain unaffected.

This restructuring reflects Meta's ongoing efforts to optimize its metaverse investments amid evolving market dynamics and user preferences.
