Magnus Carlsen Returns to Classical Chess at Malmo Event

Magnus Carlsen, the 35-year-old world number one, will make a rare appearance in classical over-the-board chess outside his home country, Norway, when he competes in Malmo, Sweden, starting Friday. However, the focus in the TePe Sigeman & Co tournament will not be solely on the Norwegian grandmaster.

Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus of Turkey, Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan, and India's Arjun Erigaisi are among the players who will also command attention in this eight-player elite tournament. The event follows a closed, single round-robin format, meaning each participant faces every other player once.

Time Control and Format

The time control is set at 90 minutes per player for the first 40 moves, followed by an additional 30 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move starting from move one.

Key Matchups

As a single round-robin event, spectators will see only one game between Carlsen and Yagiz. The 14-year-old Turkish prodigy, who is mentored by Shakhriyar Mamedyarov of Azerbaijan, has already beaten Carlsen more than once in online chess. Yagiz recently became the youngest player ever to achieve a live rating of 2700 Elo.

Other Participants

The tournament field also includes Andy Woodward of the United States, Zhu Jiner of China, Nils Grandelius of Sweden, and Jordan Van Foreest of the Netherlands.
