In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the Jamshedpur city police recovered 24.8 grams of brown sugar valued at approximately Rs 3.5 lakh and arrested five individuals in a coordinated operation conducted late on Saturday. The arrests were announced by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Piyush Pandey on Sunday.
Arrests in Gandhinagar Basti
Acting on a tip-off, police raided a location in Gandhinagar Basti under the Burmamines police station limits and apprehended Santosh Singh and his wife, Ayesha Khatoon. From their possession, officers seized 124 packets of brown sugar, weighing a total of 24.8 grams. The couple was taken into custody and is being interrogated to uncover further links in the drug network.
Subsequent Raids and Additional Arrests
Based on leads provided by Santosh Singh and Ayesha Khatoon, the police team conducted further raids in the Govindpur area. Two more individuals, identified as Gaurav Kumar alias Amar and Amit Kumar, were arrested. During this operation, law enforcement officials recovered 39 additional packets of brown sugar from the duo.
In a separate raid, police arrested Sanjay Goswami alias Sanjay Bangali from the Mango locality. A search of his premises yielded 12 packets of the banned substance, further adding to the total haul.
Link to Inter-District Drug Syndicate
During the investigation, police discovered that the arrested individuals were connected to an inter-district drug syndicate that had recently been busted by the Seraikela-Kharsawan police. On May 7, law enforcement in that district had recovered 82.8 grams of brown sugar worth Rs 16.50 lakh from three peddlers. The latest arrests are believed to be part of a larger network operating across multiple districts.
SSP Piyush Pandey confirmed that the investigations are ongoing and more arrests are expected in the coming days. He emphasized the commitment of the Jamshedpur police to dismantle drug trafficking networks and prevent the spread of narcotics in the region.
The operation underscores the collaborative efforts between district police forces to combat drug-related crimes and ensure public safety.
