Domestic Help Apps Revolutionize Urban Household Chores Across Major Indian Cities

From unpacking suitcases and organizing wardrobes to time-consuming tasks like peeling pomegranates and garlic, urban households in India are increasingly turning to domestic help apps to manage their daily chores. What began as a convenience experiment has now transformed into a rapidly scaling industry across Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Delhi NCR, driven by repeat usage and aggressive expansion of service providers.

Explosive Growth Metrics

Bengaluru-based startup Snabbit has demonstrated remarkable growth, increasing from approximately 100,000 monthly jobs in August 2025 to a current run rate of 10 lakh monthly jobs. This represents a tenfold increase in under six months, according to founder and CEO Aayush Agarwal.

"We have become a reliable backup system for households across our service areas," Agarwal explained. "Whether dealing with absenteeism of regular help, needing ad hoc support, or requiring extra assistance for special occasions, Snabbit provides the comfort of having professional help just a tap away."

Competitive Landscape and Financial Realities

Urban Company's InstaHelp vertical, launched last year, shows a similar growth trajectory. The service reached 468,000 orders within eight months of launch by October 2025, according to company disclosures. By the October to December quarter, InstaHelp reported 1.6 million orders, implying average monthly volumes exceeding 500,000.

Urban Company founder and CEO Abhiraj Singh Bhal noted during the company's latest analyst conference: "In the micro markets where we operate, we are penetrating very rapidly. The level of customer usage and retention we're observing is extremely encouraging."

However, this growth comes with significant investment costs. The company disclosed that InstaHelp reported an adjusted EBITDA loss of Rs 44 crore in the quarter, driven by expenses related to supply onboarding, training programs, and early earnings support for service professionals.

Service Professional Compensation Models

The domestic help app model represents a departure from traditional gig economy structures. Snabbit's service professionals sign up for fixed shifts and earn between Rs 20,000 and Rs 25,000 monthly, depending on shift duration. Agarwal emphasized that this compensation is assured regardless of the number of jobs assigned during the shift, providing greater income stability than typical gig work.

Similar compensation structures exist across competing platforms, creating a more predictable earning environment for service providers compared to other on-demand service sectors.

Customer Behavior and Market Dynamics

Investors emphasize that long-term success in this sector depends less on gross order growth and more on customer retention and frequency of use.

"Order growth represents an outcome metric," noted Rahul Taneja, partner at Lightspeed. "What truly matters most are frequency and retention rates. In certain high-frequency neighborhoods, customers are already booking services up to eight times monthly. In these segments, repeat usage patterns are stronger than what early food delivery or quick commerce platforms experienced during their formative months."

Industry consultants observe that current usage patterns remain largely supplemental rather than substitutive. Artham Khetan, engagement manager at Redseer Strategy Consultants, explained: "Presently, these services function primarily as a supplementary layer, stepping in when regular domestic help is unavailable rather than replacing full-time household staff. The convenience factor drives adoption, but complete replacement of traditional domestic help arrangements remains less common."

Urban Adoption Patterns

A Bellandur resident shared her experience, noting she uses domestic help apps approximately twice monthly, primarily when her regular help is absent or when preparing for visiting guests. This pattern reflects broader urban adoption trends where these platforms serve as reliable backup systems rather than primary service providers.

The domestic help app sector continues to evolve rapidly, with platforms expanding their service offerings while navigating the challenges of scaling operations, maintaining service quality, and achieving financial sustainability in a competitive market landscape.
