Discord Rolls Out Teen-Safe Default Settings Globally

Discord Implements Global Teen-Safe Default Settings to Fortify Youth Protection

In a significant move to enhance online safety, Discord is rolling out teen-by-default settings for all users worldwide. This update aims to create a safer environment for teenagers while preserving privacy and fostering meaningful connections on the platform, which is renowned for building communities through voice, video, and text, particularly in gaming contexts. The initiative underscores Discord's ongoing commitment to protecting users aged 13 and above, aligning with its broader safety architecture.

Key Features of the New Teen-Safe Experience

The update introduces several robust measures designed to tailor the Discord experience for younger users:

  • Teen-Appropriate Experience: All new and existing users will automatically have settings configured to be suitable for teens, ensuring a more controlled and age-appropriate interaction from the outset.
  • Content Filtering: Sensitive content will be blurred for teen users unless they successfully verify as adults, reducing exposure to potentially harmful material.
  • Restricted Access: Age-restricted channels, servers, and app commands will only be accessible to verified adults, limiting teen access to mature content.
  • Message and Friend Alerts: Direct messages from unknown users will be routed to a separate inbox, and friend requests from strangers will trigger warnings, helping teens avoid unwanted interactions.
  • Stage Restrictions: Only verified adults can speak on stages in servers, preventing teens from participating in potentially unsafe live discussions.

Age Verification and Privacy Protections

To access certain content or modify settings, users may need to verify their age. Discord offers multiple verification methods to balance security with user convenience:

  1. Facial Age Estimation: Users can submit video selfies that are processed on-device to estimate age without storing sensitive data.
  2. Submitting ID: Identity documents can be provided to trusted partners for verification, with documents deleted promptly after the process to protect privacy.
  3. Automatic Age Inference: Discord's system may automatically infer age based on user data, though this is supplemented by other methods for accuracy.

Key privacy protections ensure user data remains secure:

  • Identity documents are deleted quickly after verification, minimizing data retention risks.
  • Age verification status is kept private and not visible to other users, maintaining anonymity.
  • Users have the flexibility to appeal or redo the verification process anytime through the "My Account" settings, offering control over their experience.

Why This Update Matters for Teen Safety

Savannah Badalich, Head of Product Policy at Discord, emphasized the importance of this initiative: "Nowhere is our safety work more important than when it comes to teen users, which is why we are announcing these updates in time for Safer Internet Day. Rolling out teen-by-default settings globally builds on Discord's existing safety architecture, giving teens strong protections while allowing verified adults flexibility. We design our products with teen safety principles at the core and will continue working with safety experts, policymakers, and Discord users to support meaningful, long-term wellbeing for teens on the platform."

The new settings are scheduled to start rolling out in early March for all users worldwide, marking a proactive step towards creating a more secure digital space for young people. This move reflects Discord's dedication to evolving its platform in response to safety challenges, ensuring that teens can connect and communicate in a protected environment.
