Commerce, Computer Courses in Chennai See Surge in Applications, High Cut-Offs Expected
Commerce, Computer Courses in Chennai See Surge in Applications

Chennai: Getting admission to commerce and computer-related courses in the city may become increasingly challenging as colleges have received an exceptionally high number of applications for BCom, BCA, and BSc Computer Science this year. Reports indicate approximately 30 applications for each commerce seat and 10 applications for every BCA seat. Education experts suggest that the anticipated high cut-off marks for BCom courses could drive a surge in applications for computer-related programs.

High Cut-Off Marks Expected for BCom

S Uma Gowrie, principal of Ethiraj College for Women, stated, "We expect a cut-off of 400 out of 400 marks for BCom and BCom (Accounting and Finance) this year. For 70 seats in BCom (aided), we received more than 2,500 applications within three days. We anticipate more applications after the CBSE Class XII results." The college has also received 1,077 applications for BCA, and the new course BSc Cyber Security has garnered over 350 applications in the initial days.

Surge in Applications Across Major Colleges

Madras Christian College has received nearly 4,000 applications for BCom (aided) and 3,100 for BCom (Accounting and Finance). For BCA and BBA, more than 2,000 applications have come in so far. Paul Wilson, principal of the college, noted, "We are observing a revival of interest in courses such as BA Political Science and BA Economics." At Loyola College, BCom and computer science programs have received over 5,000 applications. A Louis Arockiaraj S J, principal of Loyola College, added, "BSc Visual Communication is the next most popular course, with 1,300 applications in the first week."

Shift in Preference for Specialized Commerce Courses

Colleges such as Stella Maris College, DG Vaishnav College, and Guru Nanak College reported receiving more applications for specialized courses like BCom Accounting and Finance than for the general BCom program this year. S Santhosh Baboo, principal of DG Vaishnav College, explained, "We received 3,500 applications for BCom Accounting and Finance this year. BSc Computer Science with AI has attracted more applications than the standard Computer Science program." Women's Christian College noted increased applications for Psychology and English Literature, in addition to commerce courses.

Basic Science Programs See Lower Demand

Applications for basic science programs remain subdued in many colleges. Meanwhile, engineering counselling registrations have seen a strong start. In the first 11 days, 1.3 lakh students registered for engineering counselling, compared to 2.2 lakh candidates in the entire process last year. This early trend suggests that more students may opt for engineering counselling this year.

Expert Insights on Admission Trends

Jayaprakash Gandhi, a career consultant, commented, "Considering the high cut-off for BCom courses, students are also showing interest in computer-related courses in arts and science colleges. In engineering admissions, we can expect higher enrollment in core engineering courses compared to last year, as more students are open to disciplines such as electrical engineering."
