Angry Commuters Stop Virar Local Train Over AC Conversion

Chaos erupted at Virar railway station on Friday morning after angry commuters stopped the 8:28am Virar–Churchgate local train in protest against its conversion from a regular service into an air-conditioned (AC) local.

Background of the Protest

The protest began after Western Railway implemented a decision, announced on April 29, 2026, stating that the 8:28am regular local would operate as an AC train from May 1 onwards. Hundreds of daily commuters who depended on this train alleged that the sudden conversion had severely disrupted their travel schedules and reduced the availability of affordable general local services.

Commuters' Grievances

Passengers pointed out that an AC local already operates at 8:33am, and introducing another AC train within a five-minute gap has only increased overcrowding in regular trains. Commuters claimed that the high fares of AC locals are unaffordable for workers, students, and middle-class passengers who rely on economical suburban rail services.

Protesters raised slogans against the railway administration and demanded that additional AC services be introduced separately instead of converting existing regular locals. The agitation briefly disrupted train operations at Virar station, leading to delays and affecting services on the Western Railway suburban network.

Response from Authorities

Railway authorities later initiated efforts to bring the situation under control. Meanwhile, commuters have demanded that the 8:28am service be restored as a regular local train in the interest of common passengers.
