Amazon's Panos Panay Urges Engineers: Embrace Failure to Succeed Faster
Amazon's Panos Panay: Embrace Failure to Succeed Faster

Amazon Executive Champions 'Fail Fast' Philosophy During India Visit

Panos Panay, the head of Amazon Devices and Services, has delivered a powerful message to engineers, developers, and product builders worldwide: stop fearing failure. This advice, which he shared with Amazon's teams during his recent visit to India and later on social media platform X, underscores a fundamental principle in innovation.

A Hard-Earned Lesson in Product Development

Panay described this insight as a "hard-earned learning" that he believes is crucial for building exceptional products. "Fail fast. Succeed sooner. Had the opportunity to share this hard-earned learning with the teams in India last month. Grateful for the builders who keep pushing to innovate for our customers," Panay stated in his post.

He elaborated on the human tendency to avoid acknowledging failure, which often leads to deeper problems. "The challenge is: A lot of us don't want to fail fast, because when you're failing, you want to fix it because you don't want to say you're failing. It's like our nature. And you just kind of dig the hole deeper," Panay explained to attendees.

Why Failure Is Not the Enemy

Panay emphasized that failure itself is not detrimental; rather, it's the lack of learning from it that poses a risk. "Take the learning lesson. Go again and succeed. You're just gonna go faster. Failing’s not bad unless you didn't learn anything. Then it’s bad," he asserted.

He highlighted the transformative power of applying lessons from failures: "And you know where it's magnificent? When you apply the learnings. And you know what makes a great product? Failing first." Panay's perspective is rooted in his extensive career, including over a decade at Microsoft where he led the Surface device line, giving him firsthand experience in building, failing, and rebuilding.

Panay's Immersive Experience in India

Reflecting on his visit to Amazon's Indian teams two weeks ago, Panay called it "incredible." He engaged with teams, toured laboratories, and even took a rickshaw ride through Bangalore traffic, sharing his experiences on LinkedIn.

Key takeaways from his trip include:

  • Passionate Innovation: Small teams across Chennai, Bangalore, and Hyderabad are driving core innovations in silicon, Kindle, Fire TV, and Alexa+, supported by over 100 Devices and Services labs.
  • AI Acceleration: A locally developed tool reduced testing time from two weeks to just 45 minutes, showcasing how AI is speeding up processes for customer benefit.
  • Cultural Diversity: With 22 official languages and over 1,000 dialects, Panay stressed the importance of understanding local culture to create resonant products for India's diverse population.
  • Cultural Engagement: Panay noted the deep passion for food in India, highlighting how such cultural aspects enrich the innovation environment.

Panay concluded, "We’re building the future for India, with India. And we’re just getting started." This visit not only reinforced his 'fail fast' mantra but also highlighted India's pivotal role in Amazon's global innovation strategy.
