The feature enables customers to ask questions in real time while listening to AI-generated audio summaries of products within the Amazon Shopping app.

How Amazon's 'Join the Chat' AI Feature Works

'Join the Chat' is integrated into Amazon's existing 'Hear the highlights' feature, which provides short-form audio summaries on product pages. These summaries are delivered by AI-generated hosts that present key product features, use cases, and insights gathered from listings, reviews, and publicly available data.

When users activate the feature, they can interact with the AI hosts through text or voice. The system adapts the ongoing script in real time to include a relevant answer. Amazon stated that the experience is designed so that 'customers aren't interrupting the experience—they're part of it.' The feature also takes context into account, responding based on what has already been discussed in the audio, adding new and relevant details to the conversation.

Behind the scenes, multiple AI systems work together to enable this interaction. Each product summary begins with an AI-generated script. When a user asks a question, the script dynamically updates to incorporate the response. The answer is then delivered using advanced text-to-speech technology, allowing the AI hosts to respond in a conversational tone that aligns with the ongoing audio. This creates a continuous listening experience while still allowing users to guide the discussion.

Amazon describes this as an adaptive format where 'every question they ask influences what comes next,' effectively turning product browsing into a two-way interaction.

Using the Feature

To use the feature, customers need to open a product page in the Amazon Shopping app and look for the 'Hear the highlights' option. After starting the audio summary, users can tap a raised-hand icon to enter 'Join the Chat' mode. From there, they can type or speak questions while continuing to browse the app. The feature is currently available to users in the United States and works across millions of product listings, although not all products support audio summaries yet.

With the addition of 'Join the Chat,' Amazon is stepping towards making an interactive shopping experience for its customers, wherein customers would be able to directly communicate with AI as they browse through different products. Rather than just reading product descriptions and user reviews, customers can ask direct questions to get relevant answers to their queries.
