In an inspiring move that defies age and expectations, tennis legend Venus Williams is set for a historic comeback at the Australian Open. The seven-time Grand Slam singles champion has been awarded a wildcard entry, making her the oldest woman ever to compete in the season's opening major tournament.
A Legendary Comeback to Melbourne Park
Tournament officials confirmed the exciting news on Friday. The 45-year-old American superstar will feature in the main draw for the first time since 2021. This marks an incredible 22nd appearance for Williams at the Australian Open and her first visit to Melbourne Park in five years.
"I’m excited to be back in Australia and looking forward to competing during the Australian summer," Williams said, expressing her joy. "I’ve had so many incredible memories there, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to return to a place that has meant so much to my career."
Breaking Records and Creating History
By stepping onto the court in Melbourne, Venus Williams will officially break a significant age record. She will surpass the previous mark held by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who competed at the Australian Open in 2015 at the age of 44.
Williams' history at the tournament is rich and memorable. She first played at the Australian Open back in 1998. In a famous early match, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the second round before eventually losing to Lindsay Davenport in the quarterfinals. Over her illustrious career, she has compiled an impressive 54–21 win-loss record at Melbourne Park. She has been a finalist twice, finishing as runner-up to Serena in both the 2003 and 2017 finals.
The Road Back to Grand Slam Tennis
Williams' journey back to the Australian Open swing begins next week at the Auckland Classic, where she has also received a wildcard entry. Following that, she is scheduled to play in Hobart as part of her preparation for the Grand Slam, which runs from January 18 to February 1.
This comeback continues her return to competitive tennis, which she reignited at last year’s US Open after a 16-month absence from the professional tour. Beyond her singles success, Williams is also a four-time Australian Open doubles champion, showcasing her all-court prowess.
Off the court, Williams recently celebrated a personal milestone, marrying Danish-born model and actor Andrea Preti in late December in Florida. As she prepares for another chapter in her legendary career, Venus Williams continues to inspire fans worldwide by challenging the conventional timelines of athletic achievement.
