Frances Tiafoe Advances with Confidence at 2026 Miami Open

American tennis star Frances Tiafoe is building momentum at the 2026 Miami Open, having already eliminated defending champion Jakub Mensík in the Round of 32. His next challenge comes on Tuesday against France's Terence Atmane, in a match that will determine who progresses closer to the quarter-finals. This encounter is anticipated to be a fiercely competitive battle on the court.

Atmane's Off-Court Commentary on Record Pokémon Card Sale

Just before this crucial match, Atmane captured attention for his candid remarks about a high-profile off-court event. The 24-year-old French player, a long-time Pokémon card enthusiast who began collecting in 2007, shared his thoughts on the record-breaking sale of a rare Pikachu Illustrator card. Earlier this year, the card was sold for $16.5 million to collector Peter Petipas, in a transaction involving internet personality Logan Paul.

In an interview with Tennis Channel, Atmane did not mince words, stating that the buyer significantly overpaid. "Overpaid by the buyer, that's for sure," he asserted. "He bought it for 5.3 million in 2023, which was already huge. The comparison between a PSA 9 and PSA 10 is usually two or three times the value, so I was hoping that in a PSA 9... I know a friend who bought it for 1.2 million. So for me, it was never going to go above 4 million, so 5.3 was already big. And sixteen and a half million... honestly, great job, because now it's the most valuable Pokémon card of all time, the biggest sale ever in every single TCG. It's great that Logan Paul made history again, buying the most expensive and selling for the most."

Focus Shifts Back to On-Court Rivalry

Despite the off-court debate, Atmane's attention is now fully redirected to his upcoming tennis match. He is set to face World No. 20 Frances Tiafoe, with the two having previously clashed earlier this year at the Dallas Open. In that encounter, Atmane started strongly, securing the first set 6-4, but Tiafoe mounted a comeback to win the next two sets 6-2, 6-2.

This time, Atmane enters the match with improved momentum, having already defeated formidable opponents like Arthur Rinderknech and Felix Auger-Aliassime in Miami. These victories demonstrate that he is not merely participating but actively pursuing a deep run in the tournament.

Tiafoe remains the favorite due to his greater experience and proven ability to handle high-pressure matches. However, Atmane has showcased his capacity to surprise top-ranked players, adding an intriguing layer of unpredictability to this clash. The match promises to be more compelling than initial rankings might suggest, blending athletic prowess with personal interests off the court.
