Casper Ruud has made his priorities crystal clear. The Norwegian tennis professional is competing at the 2026 Australian Open, but his mind is also firmly on home. His wife, Maria, is pregnant, and Ruud states he is prepared to leave the tournament at any moment to be by her side.
A Constant Connection
Ruud expressed deep gratitude to his wife for supporting his decision to travel to Melbourne for the season's first Grand Slam. He revealed that except during his actual matches, he keeps his phone's ringer switched on at all hours. This ensures he is immediately alert to any news or call from home.
"I have to thank Maria for letting me go in the first place," Ruud said. "I know she's at home resting and preparing. The ringer is on all day, just in case."
Perspective Beyond the Court
The world number 12 seed offered a refreshing perspective on his career and life. "There's more to life than just tennis," he acknowledged. However, he remains committed to his sport for as long as circumstances allow. "I'm going to be here for as long as I can and as long as Maria lets me," Ruud added with a smile.
On the court, his performance remains strong. Ruud comfortably defeated Italy's Mattia Bellucci in the opening round with a score of 6-1, 6-2, 6-4. His next challenge is a match against Spain's Jaume Munar.
Embracing a New Chapter
Before the tournament began, Ruud shared his excitement about impending fatherhood with ATPTour.com. He and his wife have been eagerly awaiting this new phase for about six months.
"It's really exciting. It's a new chapter for us," Ruud stated. "It will mean a new way of life on tour." He spoke fondly of his own close family bonds and expressed a strong desire to be a good parent himself.
Ruud recognizes the demanding schedule of a professional tennis player but is determined to find balance. "I look forward to trying to be there as much as I can," he said. He plans to use any downtime from the court to be with his future daughter, highlighting where his heart truly lies.
