Emma Raducanu finds herself under scrutiny once more, yet this time the focus shifts from her on-court triumphs to a persistent pattern of coaching turnover. The 2021 US Open champion has cycled through multiple coaches in a remarkably brief period, sparking renewed concerns about her professional development and career trajectory.
Martina Navratilova's Firm Advice on Coaching Consistency
During the Miami Open, tennis legend Martina Navratilova addressed the issue directly in an interview with Sky Sports. She emphasized the necessity for Raducanu to exercise caution in her selection process and commit to a single coach for an extended duration. Navratilova's comments arrive at a critical juncture, as Raducanu has experienced fluctuating performance levels and encountered injury setbacks throughout the current season.
Navratilova articulated her perspective with a blend of firmness and support, highlighting the detrimental effects of frequent coaching changes on a player's growth. "I mean, I don't know what's the record for a coach—maybe six months! So, I wish that she would really pick whoever she wants to be her coach carefully and then stick with it," she stated.
She elaborated on the importance of allowing time for the player-coach dynamic to mature, noting that adaptation and integration into one's gameplay require patience. "Give it a year because it takes a while to be comfortable with making changes and being able to incorporate the person into your game. The biggest thing I see, I think she could get fitter, which the coach has nothing to do with, but you know, the coach can only do so much. Pick the right coach and stick with him or her, please!"
Raducanu's Current Struggles and Coaching History
Emma Raducanu's recent statistics underscore the challenges she faces. This year, she holds a balanced record of 7-7, with notable defeats including a Round of 32 loss to Amanda Anisimova at Indian Wells. Subsequently, she withdrew from the Miami Open due to a lower back injury and illness, further complicating her season.
Her coaching roster has been notably transient. The most recent full-time coach, Francisco Roig, departed after the Australian Open and has since joined Iga Swiatek's team. Prior to Roig, Raducanu collaborated with several coaches, such as Andrew Richardson, who guided her to the US Open victory, alongside others like Torben Beltz and Dmitry Tursunov.
Raducanu's Perspective on Coaching and Personal Game
In contrast to Navratilova's advice, Emma Raducanu presents a divergent viewpoint. She expresses reservations about committing to a long-term coach, citing the intense scrutiny and pressure associated with such decisions. "I don't necessarily want to have one coach in the role because anyone I bring in is straight away going to be scrutinised—even if it's a trial. I might feel the pressure to stick with them, even if it's not necessarily the right decision," she explained to BBC Sport.
Raducanu also revealed that an influx of external guidance has impacted her natural playing style. "I have had a lot of people telling me what to do, how to play, and it hasn't necessarily fit. I want to come back to my natural way of playing. That takes time to relearn because that's something that has been coached out of me a little bit."
Currently, she operates without a dedicated full-time coach, relying instead on her hitting partner Alexis Canter and physio Emma Stewart for support.
Signs of Progress Amidst Uncertainty
Despite these challenges, there are indications of positive momentum in Raducanu's career. Over the past two years, her ranking has shown improvement, and in 2025, she delivered strong performances with deep runs in tournaments such as Washington and Miami.
