France captain Kylian Mbappe has moved level with Miroslav Klose for the second-most goal involvements in FIFA World Cup history since 1966, reaching 20 (16 goals and 4 assists). Only Lionel Messi sits ahead with 26, according to OptaJose.
Assists in France's win over Norway
Mbappe failed to score in France's 4-1 victory over Norway in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group I match in Boston on Friday, but provided two assists for Ousmane Dembele. Dembele's hat-trick powered France to a commanding win.
Both sides had already secured knockout qualification after winning their first two matches. France topped the group on goal difference and needed only a draw to finish first, but sealed top spot emphatically.
Dembele's first-half hat-trick
Dembele opened the scoring in the 7th minute with a brilliant finish, then doubled the lead in the 20th minute with a stunning strike from outside the box. Norway responded immediately through Thelo Aasgaard in the 21st minute, but Dembele restored the cushion in the 32nd minute with a powerful finish for his hat-trick. His treble is the first first-half hat-trick at a World Cup in the 21st century.
Missed penalty and late goal
Norway had a chance to come back in the second half but striker Jorgen Strand Larsen missed a penalty. France winger Desire Doue then added a fourth goal in the 94th minute, scoring with a header after a cross from PSG teammate Bradley Barcola.
Norway finished second in Group I and will face Ivory Coast in Dallas in the round of 32. France will stay on the East Coast to face a third-place qualifier.
