The Indian squash campaign at the World Squash Championships came to a close as both Saurav Ghosal and Joshna Chinappa suffered defeats in their respective second-round matches. The tournament, held in Chicago, saw the end of India's representation after these two key players were eliminated.
Saurav Ghosal's Defeat
Saurav Ghosal, India's top male squash player, faced a tough challenge against world number three Mohamed Elshorbagy of Egypt. Ghosal put up a spirited fight but eventually lost in straight games, 11-7, 11-6, 11-4. The match lasted 45 minutes, with Elshorbagy's powerful shots and relentless pressure proving too much for the Indian. Ghosal, ranked 15th in the world, had earlier won his first-round match against Malaysia's Eain Yow Ng in four games.
Joshna Chinappa's Exit
Joshna Chinappa, the leading Indian female player, also bowed out in the second round. She faced world number five Nour El Tayeb of Egypt and lost 11-6, 11-4, 11-6. Chinappa, ranked 20th globally, struggled to counter El Tayeb's speed and accuracy. The match lasted 35 minutes. Chinappa had advanced to the second round by defeating Mexico's Samantha Teran in three games.
India's Overall Performance
India had three players in the main draw of the World Squash Championships. Besides Ghosal and Chinappa, Mahesh Mangaonkar also competed but lost in the first round. Mangaonkar was defeated by England's Tom Richards in four games. The early exits mean that India's best performance in the tournament remains the quarterfinal appearances by Ghosal in 2013 and 2019, and by Chinappa in 2015.
The World Squash Championships feature top players from around the globe, and this year's event has seen several upsets. However, for India, the focus now shifts to upcoming tournaments, including the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games, where the players will aim to improve their rankings and bring home medals. The experience gained from competing against the world's best will be invaluable for Ghosal and Chinappa as they prepare for these major events.
