Erin Routliffe's Triumphant Return: From Mental Breakdown to Grand Slam Glory
Erin Routliffe's Comeback: Breakdown to Grand Slam Wins

Erin Routliffe's Remarkable Journey from Adversity to Grand Slam Success

Two-time US Open doubles champion and former World No. 1 Erin Routliffe experienced a turbulent 2023 season, marked by eight consecutive defeats and a significant mental breakdown. However, she made a stunning comeback in 2024, claiming two US Open doubles titles and reaching the Wimbledon doubles final. Routliffe credits her resilience and inspiration from her sister Tess, a decorated para swimmer, for her triumphant return to the top of the tennis world.

Learning from Early Setbacks and Finding Strength

Reflecting on a first-round loss at Wimbledon in 2019, Routliffe described it as a tough experience that ultimately made her stronger. "That loss was tough. But ultimately it made me stronger at the end of the day. It's something that I learned a lot from," she said. "I always say every loss teaches you something. I brought that into my experience in Slams for years after." Following this defeat, she stepped away from tennis for nearly six months, admitting she wasn't enjoying the sport and wanted to be happy. "I thought ultimately you want to be happy and so I gave up. But somewhere inside me I wanted to leave the sport in a positive way," she explained. After a couple of months, she missed tennis and returned with a renewed mindset.

Overcoming a Mental Breakdown in 2023

The year 2023 brought a major challenge when Routliffe suffered a mental breakdown. "It was definitely a massive life moment for me," she recalled. "I couldn't have done it without Bruce (coach Lipka). Lot of people in the background helped. I was 28 that time. It was very tough but people around me supported and believed in me." Despite the difficulties, she found joy in the process, highlighting the support system that helped her through this period.

Advice for Athletes Facing Similar Struggles

Routliffe offered valuable advice for other athletes going through similar struggles. "I would say 'find your why and kind of stick to that'!" she emphasized. "Tennis is such a tough sport. You are alone a lot, and you don't have many people around you most of the time unless you are at the top of your sport. I think that's what is remarkable about this sport is you grind for so many years to get there. So, just keep going, keep fighting and make sure you find what makes you happy."

Inspiration from Sister Tess, a Decorated Para Swimmer

Routliffe's sister Tess has been a significant source of inspiration throughout her journey. "Tess has inspired me since she was little. I watched her go to the pool at 4 am for practice. I have always been envious of her and her ability to work really hard all the time," she shared. "I am her big sister but she inspires me in so many ways." Both sisters were in Paris for the 2024 Olympics, with Tess arriving a month later, and Routliffe expressed hope for competing together in the Los Angeles Games in 2028. "But if we could both be in the Los Angeles (Games 2028), that would be really fun."

Preparations for the BJK Cup and Future Confidence

Looking ahead, Routliffe's preparations for the BJK Cup have been positive. "The preparations have been pretty good. I have been playing more matches and have become a full-timer on tour. So, I play a lot of tennis," she stated. Expressing confidence in her team's chances, she added, "I think we can beat any team here. It's all really close. I am confident about our chances." This optimism reflects her renewed passion and dedication to the sport after overcoming significant personal and professional challenges.
