Novak Djokovic Credits Virat Kohli for Sparking Cricket Interest at Laureus Awards
At the prestigious 2026 Laureus World Sports Awards ceremony, tennis legend Novak Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, publicly expressed his deep admiration and affection for Indian cricket icon Virat Kohli. Djokovic, who co-hosted the event alongside freestyle skiing sensation Eileen Gu, revealed how Kohli personally influenced his newfound interest in cricket.
Djokovic's Heartfelt Message for India and Its Fans
During a red-carpet interaction ahead of the awards ceremony, Djokovic was asked about his message for India. The Serbian tennis superstar responded with genuine warmth, stating he has long admired the country and its passionate sports enthusiasts. "My message is always love, respect, and appreciation for all the support I have personally received from Indian tennis and sports fans around the world over the years," Djokovic told Times Now.
He emphasized his strong connection to India, adding, "I've met so many of them during this time. My message would also be: 'See you very soon in India,' because I need to go there. I've been feeling a calling to visit for the last couple of years." Djokovic expressed hope to organize an event or match in India, underscoring his closeness to the Indian people.
How Virat Kohli Inspired Djokovic's Cricket Fandom
Coming from Serbia, where cricket is not widely followed, Djokovic shared how his friendship with Virat Kohli transformed his perspective on the sport. "Yes, Virat is a friend and someone I, of course, respect and admire. He's actually, to be honest, the reason why I started following cricket," Djokovic revealed.
He admitted, "I hadn't followed it before, but through him, I started following it more." The tennis champion also hinted at future collaborations, saying, "We keep in touch, and hopefully, when I come, I don't want to say if, but when I come, to India, he can join me. We could play a little bit of tennis and a little bit of cricket, have fun, and just spread positive vibes while celebrating sport."
