Dhakshineswar Suresh Emerges as India's Next Tennis Sensation
In a significant development for Indian tennis, Dhakshineswar Suresh has firmly established himself as the nation's next major hope following flawless performances in the Davis Cup. His standout outings against higher-ranked opponents, Switzerland and The Netherlands, have catapulted him into the spotlight, earning praise from team officials and fans alike.
Captain's Confidence in Suresh's Role
Speaking exclusively to TOI during the Davis Cup team's felicitation event in New Delhi earlier this week, India's non-playing captain Rohit Rajpal highlighted Suresh's growing importance. Rajpal stated that Suresh is now the preferred choice for the two singles matches and is under strong consideration for doubles fixtures as well.
"Suresh has certainly become an obvious choice," Rajpal emphasized. "Our No. 1 player, Sumit Nagal, has been a consistent part of several Davis Cup campaigns, and now Suresh has seamlessly integrated as a vital component of the team. He is set to turn professional in May after completing his college education in the United States."
The Journey to National Representation
Rajpal detailed the meticulous process behind recruiting Suresh for the Indian team. He identified Suresh while the young talent was competing in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in the US, where he pursued his college degree. However, securing his participation required considerable effort.
"I extensively researched the US collegiate system and discovered that very few players hold an Indian passport," Rajpal explained. "Many had either relinquished their citizenship or possessed OCI cards. Suresh, with his Indian passport, perfectly met our criteria. Convincing him to play for India over the phone was straightforward, but persuading his coach, Tony Bresky, to release him for national duties proved challenging. Additionally, arranging his India visa was an energy-draining process. Despite these hurdles, we successfully managed everything."
Upcoming Challenges and Preparations
Looking ahead, India is scheduled to face South Korea in an away tie during the second round of Davis Cup qualifiers from September 18-20. Rajpal acknowledged the difficulty of this matchup, noting that playing in Korea presents one of the toughest propositions for the team.
"Had the tie been hosted here in India, I would have been more optimistic," Rajpal admitted. "Nevertheless, we have six months to prepare thoroughly, and we are committed to fighting hard to secure a positive outcome."
This development marks a pivotal moment for Indian tennis, as Suresh's rise promises to bolster the nation's prospects in international competitions, starting with the crucial qualifiers against South Korea.
