CM Shivakumar Challenges Bangalore Golf Club to Build New Course
Karnataka Chief Minister Shivakumar on Wednesday urged the Bangalore Golf Club (BGC) to build a new golf course, questioning why the prestigious club has not contributed to the city's growth like other institutions. Speaking at an event, he said: 'You have the capacity to build Bangalore and have done it. So why haven’t you built a new Bangalore Golf Club?'
Call for Expansion and Modernization
The Chief Minister emphasized that the club, which has been a landmark in Bengaluru for over a century, should expand and modernize to meet the needs of a growing city. He noted that other institutions in the city have taken up new projects, but BGC has lagged behind. 'Bangalore has grown tremendously, and the golf club must also grow with it,' Shivakumar added.
Club's Response and Future Plans
BGC officials responded positively, stating that they are exploring options to develop a new course. The club has been in discussions with the state government regarding land allocation for a second course. 'We are committed to expanding our facilities and will work with the government to make this happen,' a club spokesperson said. The new course is expected to be built on the outskirts of the city, providing a modern layout and additional amenities.
Impact on Bengaluru's Sports Infrastructure
The move is seen as a boost to Bengaluru's sports infrastructure, which already includes top-tier cricket, football, and tennis facilities. A new golf course would attract international tournaments and promote the sport among younger generations. The Chief Minister assured full government support for the project, including land and regulatory approvals.
