Veteran squash star Joshna Chinappa and rising talent Veer Chotrani were crowned champions at the prestigious 80th CCI Western India Squash Tournament on Sunday. The finals, held at the iconic Cricket Club of India courts in Mumbai, saw both top seeds overcome their challengers to lift the trophies in their respective categories.
Chinappa's Gritty Comeback Secures Fifth Title
In the women's final, Joshna Chinappa showcased her experience and resilience. After dropping the opening game to second seed Sanya Vats, Chinappa mounted a strong comeback. She won the next three games with scores of 11-8, 11-8, and 11-5 to seal the match 3-1. This remarkable victory marks her fifth title win at this historic tournament, with her previous triumph dating back to the 2007–08 season.
An emotional Chinappa expressed what the win meant to her, highlighting her deep connection with the venue. "I have been playing here at the CCI since I was 12 years old and have trained here regularly. Hence winning here at the CCI is very special. I feel very proud of winning the title," she stated after her hard-fought victory.
Chotrani's Dominant Display in Men's Final
The men's final witnessed a commanding performance from top seed Veer Chotrani. He defeated the second seed, Suraj Chand, in straight games with a scoreline of 11-9, 11-9, 11-2. This win marks Chotrani's second title at the CCI Western India Tournament, having last won it in the 2022–23 season.
Similar to Chinappa, Chotrani also shared a sentimental bond with the venue. "I have been practising at this venue since I was seven. The venue is special because of the history attached to it. It is great to be among the great names who have won the tournament," he remarked post his win, acknowledging the legacy of the competition.
