Shillong: Meghalaya achieved a milestone in its sporting journey as the host state agreement for the 39th National Games 2027 was officially signed at the JN Sports Complex, Shillong, on Saturday.
Key Dignitaries Present
Union minister for youth affairs and sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, and Indian Olympic Association president PT Usha were present at the event.
Government Commitment to Sports
Mandaviya said the Centre remained committed to strengthening sports infrastructure and nurturing talent in the northeast. He emphasized that the central government would provide all necessary support to ensure the success of the National Games.
Chief Minister's Vision
CM Sangma said the signing of the agreement marked a “proud moment for Meghalaya” and reflected the state’s vision of becoming a “leading sporting destination” in the country. He highlighted the state's efforts to develop world-class sports facilities.
PT Usha's Remarks
Celebrated sprinter PT Usha described the development as a significant step forward for sports in Meghalaya. She expressed confidence that the National Games would inspire young athletes from the region.
New Infrastructure
An Integrated Multipurpose Indoor Hall, which was inaugurated, is expected to serve as one of the key venues for the National Games and provide modern facilities for athletes across the region. The hall is equipped with state-of-the-art amenities.
High-Altitude Training Centre
Mandaviya also announced that a state-of-the-art, world-class high-altitude training centre, worth Rs 150 crore, would be established in Meghalaya very soon. This centre will benefit athletes from the entire northeastern region.
The signing of the agreement marks a new chapter in Meghalaya's sports development, with the state set to host the prestigious multi-sport event for the first time.
