Veteran Olympic broadcaster Bob Costas has entered one of the most contentious debates currently shaping the global sports landscape. The longtime NBC commentator has publicly endorsed the International Olympic Committee's newly announced regulations that will restrict women's events at the Olympic Games exclusively to biological females. During a recent appearance on CNN, Costas presented a markedly different perspective from Semenya's criticism. The broadcaster emphasized that the IOC's decision fundamentally concerns competitive equity rather than targeting specific individuals or groups.
"Common sense is not transphobic," Costas stated unequivocally during the interview. He elaborated that sports have historically implemented categorical divisions specifically to maintain fairness in competition.
To illustrate his position, Costas offered several straightforward examples. He noted that high school athletes typically don't compete against college athletes due to physical developmental differences. Similarly, he pointed out that men's and women's sports have traditionally been separated for legitimate competitive reasons.
Basketball Analogy and Respectful Approach
Costas further developed his argument using a basketball comparison. He referenced University of Iowa basketball star Caitlin Clark, suggesting that if she could successfully compete in the NBA, it would represent an extraordinary athletic achievement. However, Costas contrasted this scenario by noting that if an average NBA player transitioned to the WNBA and immediately dominated the competition, serious questions would arise about competitive fairness.
Simultaneously, Costas emphasized that transgender athletes deserve to be treated with "dignity and respect." He clarified that the central issue emerges when inherent physical advantages substantially influence competitive outcomes at elite levels.
IOC Policy Details and Implementation
The IOC's comprehensive new policy also addresses athletes with Differences of Sex Development (DSD). According to the regulations, these athletes must demonstrate that they don't gain performance benefits from testosterone levels that exceed established female parameters.
A specific exception exists for athletes with Complete Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome (CAIS), a rare condition where individuals with XY chromosomes are insensitive to male hormones and therefore don't undergo typical male puberty.
The policy development followed mounting pressure on the IOC, particularly after eligibility questions emerged during the Paris 2024 Olympics. Boxing champions Imane Khelif of Algeria and Lin Yu-ting of Taiwan became focal points in these discussions when their eligibility testing results prompted public scrutiny.

The IOC plans to utilize a one-time SRY gene test to determine athlete eligibility. This examination, which can be administered through either a cheek swab or blood sample, is already employed by several international sports federations.
