PBKS Pacer Yash Thakur Eyes IPL 2026 Success After Stellar Domestic Season
Yash Thakur Aims to Shine in IPL 2026 with Lessons from Bumrah

PBKS Pacer Yash Thakur Targets IPL 2026 Impact After Dominant Domestic Run

Ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, Punjab Kings and Vidarbha fast bowler Yash Thakur has articulated his ambition to translate his exceptional domestic performances into match-winning contributions in the lucrative T20 league. In an exclusive interview with ANI, the 27-year-old emphasized his focus on learning from seasoned teammates and international stars to enhance his game.

Learning from the Best: Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah

Yash Thakur highlighted the invaluable insights gained from training alongside Punjab Kings teammate Arshdeep Singh, India's leading T20I wicket-taker, and South African all-rounder Marco Jansen. He noted that observing their diverse bowling styles and death-over strategies has been crucial for his development. "From Arshdeep, I have learned about death bowling, his mindset during the critical phases of a match. Same with Marco Jansen. They both bowl in every phase, and I aim to adopt that versatility," Thakur explained.

Additionally, he expressed admiration for Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, describing him as an inspiration in a batting-dominated era. "Watching Bumrah's mastery over batters is motivational. His unique mindset and bowling techniques offer lessons for every bowler. I try to implement what I learn from him in domestic cricket and the IPL," he added, underscoring his aspiration to earn an India cap through consistent performances.

Impressive Domestic Form Sets the Stage

Thakur enters IPL 2026 on the back of a remarkable domestic season. In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT), he emerged as the third-highest wicket-taker overall, claiming 18 wickets in just seven matches at an impressive average of 9.88, including a four-wicket haul and a five-wicket haul with best figures of 5/16. Although Vidarbha did not advance past the group stage in SMAT, they rebounded strongly to secure their maiden Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT) title after finishing as runners-up the previous season.

In the VHT, Thakur was a revelation, taking 19 wickets in nine matches at an average of 25.57, with two four-wicket hauls and best figures of 4/50, which he achieved in the title clash against Saurashtra. This consistent wicket-taking ability has bolstered his confidence ahead of the IPL campaign.

Team Environment and Leadership Insights

Despite limited game time with Punjab Kings last season, where he featured in only two matches during their runners-up finish, Thakur praised the inclusive atmosphere fostered by skipper Shreyas Iyer and coach Ricky Ponting. "I never felt like I played just two matches. Ricky and Shreyas bhai have created an environment where everyone feels integral to the team, regardless of playing time. We are all team players focused on collective success," he stated.

Comparing his experiences under different captains, Thakur noted similarities between Shreyas Iyer and his former skipper at Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), KL Rahul. "Both Shreyas and KL share a trophy-winning mindset and are not content with mere playoff qualifications. While KL is calmer, Iyer exhibits more energy on the field, but both drive the team with positivity," he elaborated. Thakur previously represented LSG from 2023 to 2024, taking 24 wickets in 19 matches under Rahul's leadership.

Mindset and Goals for IPL 2026

With a clear focus on execution, Thakur aims to bring the strategic plans that succeeded in domestic cricket to the IPL stage. "My domestic season was very productive, and the plans I implemented worked well. I want to carry those into the IPL, execute them better, and contribute to PBKS's victories. My goal is to help the team excel and win the tournament," he affirmed.

Ready for increased game time, Thakur emphasized his preparedness for any role. "I stay ready for every match, and whatever tactical decisions are made, I am committed to delivering my best. The team's progress is paramount, as it aids individual development too," he concluded, setting the stage for what promises to be an impactful IPL season for the promising pacer.
