Sanju Samson's Century Breaks CSK's Losing Streak in IPL 2026
The weight of expectation finally lifted from Sanju Samson's shoulders as the wicketkeeper-batter delivered a match-winning performance for Chennai Super Kings. After three consecutive defeats to start the IPL 2026 season, Samson's magnificent century propelled CSK to their first victory with a 23-run triumph over Delhi Capitals at Chepauk on Saturday.
From Early Struggles to Match-Winning Heroics
Samson, who had managed just 22 runs across CSK's first three matches with scores of 6, 7, and 9, roared back in spectacular fashion. The batter, traded from Rajasthan Royals ahead of the season, registered his first major contribution in CSK colors with an unbeaten 115 off just 56 deliveries. This marked his fourth IPL century overall and the first of the IPL 2026 season.
The partnership with Ayush Mhatre proved crucial as the duo added 113 runs for the second wicket in just over 11 overs. Mhatre contributed a valuable 59 off 36 balls, showcasing growing maturity in his innings. Their dominant stand powered CSK to a commanding total of 212 for 2 after being asked to bat first.
Emotional Victory and Team Support
When teammates surrounded Samson with high-fives and celebrations after the match, the batter appeared calm and content, flashing a broad smile that reflected both relief and satisfaction. "Really means a lot. The trust they showed, it was very responsible. Luckily everything came off nicely," Samson said after being named Player of the Match.
He acknowledged the challenges of adapting to a new franchise: "It never felt like a different franchise. People are so nice. We had a meeting of 50 seconds today even after losing three matches." The batter, who entered the IPL with high expectations after hitting three half-centuries in India's T20 World Cup triumph in March, emphasized the importance of basics: "I have failed a lot. Mind gets a bit here and there. I need to know what my basics are. It's about doing the basics right."
Delhi Capitals Falter Against Clinical Bowling
In response to CSK's imposing total, Delhi Capitals struggled against a brilliant bowling performance led by Jamie Overton. The English bowler delivered a match-winning spell of 4 for 18, dismantling the Delhi batting lineup as they were bowled out for 189 in 19.3 overs. The 23-run victory margin provided CSK with much-needed momentum after their disappointing start to the campaign.
Samson dedicated his celebration to CSK coach Stephen Fleming, saying: "That was for Fleming, I know how challenging it can be. I just wanted to dedicate this to him." He also praised his batting partner: "It was very important to have great partnerships. Ayush has shown so much maturity."
The victory restored belief among CSK supporters and marked a turning point in their IPL 2026 campaign. Samson's innings, combining power hitting with intelligent shot selection, demonstrated why he remains one of the most exciting batting talents in Indian cricket.
