Rajasthan Royals Suffer Major Blow as Sam Curran Sidelined for IPL 2026
In a significant development just days before the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, Rajasthan Royals have been dealt a severe setback with the loss of star all-rounder Sam Curran. The England cricketer has been ruled out of the tournament due to a groin injury, prompting swift action from the franchise to secure a replacement.
Kumar Sangakkara Voices Disappointment Over Curran's Absence
Rajasthan Royals head coach and Director of Cricket, Kumar Sangakkara, expressed his disappointment at losing a player of Curran's calibre so close to the season opener. "We are disappointed to lose a player of Sam's calibre so close to the start of the season," Sangakkara stated. "Sam brings immense value with both bat and ball. His absence is a significant blow to our plans for IPL 2026."
Curran had joined the Royals as part of a high-profile pre-auction trade with Chennai Super Kings, which saw Sanju Samson move to CSK while Rajasthan acquired Curran alongside Ravindra Jadeja. Unfortunately, his injury has forced an early exit before he could make any impact this season.
Dasun Shanaka Named as Replacement for Sam Curran
In response to this setback, Rajasthan Royals have moved quickly to bring in Sri Lankan T20I captain Dasun Shanaka as Curran's replacement. The franchise confirmed this move in an official announcement on Monday. "However, we are pleased to have found an ideal replacement in Dasun Shanaka, a finisher with the bat and a quality all-rounder who helps maintain the balance of our side," added Sangakkara.
Shanaka arrives with considerable T20 experience and is expected to slot into the lower middle order, offering both finishing ability and all-round depth. He previously featured in the IPL during the 2023 season for Gujarat Titans, where he played three matches.
Shanaka's Move Highlights Growing Trend in T20 Leagues
Shanaka's transfer to Rajasthan Royals marks him as the second international player, after Zimbabwe's Blessing Muzarabani, to leave the Pakistan Super League for a stint in the Indian Premier League. This move underscores the fluid nature of player movements across global T20 competitions and the strategic depth it adds to franchises.
Rajasthan Royals' Upcoming Fixtures in IPL 2026
Rajasthan Royals are set to kick off their IPL 2026 campaign with a highly anticipated clash against Chennai Super Kings on March 30 at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium. Following this opening match, their schedule includes:
- April 4: vs Gujarat Titans
- April 7: vs Mumbai Indians
- April 10: vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru
These matches will be crucial for the Royals as they aim to integrate Shanaka into the squad and overcome the loss of Curran. The team's management remains optimistic about their prospects, banking on Shanaka's experience and versatility to fill the void left by the injured all-rounder.
