South African batter Dewald Brevis has opened up about a simple yet profound piece of advice from MS Dhoni that has stayed with him since his debut IPL season in 2022. Brevis, who joined Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2025 as a replacement player, revealed how Dhoni taught him the critical difference between confidence and overconfidence.
Dhoni's Timeless Advice
In an interview with ANI, Brevis recalled: "One of the best advices I got from MS (Dhoni) was my first year actually of IPL, and I wasn't yet at Chennai, but he told me 'you get two sides, you get overconfidence and confidence, and just be more on the side of confidence.' And that's been the one piece of advice that really stuck with me from him."
Learning from Dhoni's Nature
Brevis also praised Dhoni's calm demeanor and humility, noting that he has gained valuable insights by observing the CSK legend during training sessions and team interactions. "Whenever I've been in the environment where he is and just seeing how he does his things and the way he lives, the person he is, he's just being himself," Brevis said, adding that Dhoni's experience and knowledge make him a role model for young players.
Impact Despite Injury
Although Dhoni has not played for CSK in IPL 2026 due to a calf injury, Brevis acknowledged that the squad still benefits from his presence. "And it's amazing to have him... I wish he could have played, like I think a lot of people wish that," he added.

Brevis described joining CSK as a replacement player as one of the best decisions of his career. He expressed gratitude for the love from fans and the franchise, stating, "It's been the best decision ever to come as that replacement player to Chennai." He noted that his time with CSK has helped him grow both as a player and as a person.
