LSG Owner Sanjiv Goenka Sets IPL 2026 Title as Mandate, Dismisses Playoff Success as Insufficient

In a bold statement ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) owner Sanjiv Goenka has declared that merely reaching the playoffs is no longer acceptable for the franchise. He emphasized that the team must secure the championship trophy to earn genuine respect and affection from fans and the cricketing community.

Evolving Identity and the Trophy Imperative

Goenka, speaking on JioStar and cited by news agency ANI, articulated that LSG's true identity is still in development. He stressed that in sports, ultimate recognition comes only with victory. "I think the true identity is still evolving. For any sports team, until you win, you don't receive the same level of respect or affection that comes with lifting the trophy. Yes, we've made the playoffs twice, but that's clearly not good enough. You win some, you lose some, but we have to win our first trophy," Goenka stated firmly.

This perspective underscores a shift in mindset, where consistency alone is deemed inadequate without the crowning achievement of a title win. Goenka's comments reflect a growing impatience within the franchise to transition from contenders to champions.

Reflections on IPL 2025 and Strategic Adjustments

Reflecting on the previous season, Goenka highlighted several positives from IPL 2025, where LSG won four of their first six matches despite significant challenges. "The positive was that we won four of our first six games despite most of our frontline bowlers being injured," he noted, praising the team's resilience.

He pointed to strategic decisions that paid off, such as promoting Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh to open the batting, which proved successful for both players. Additionally, the emergence of newcomer Digvesh Rathi with the ball was a bright spot. However, Goenka acknowledged a critical weakness: "We did realise that we lacked a strong bowling core, and we've consciously addressed that by building a domestic Indian bowling unit this time. We're happy with what we have," he added, indicating focused squad improvements for the upcoming season.

Focus on Team Unity Over Individual Brilliance

Goenka expressed confidence in the current squad's balance and composition, asserting that it possesses all necessary elements for success. "You can always improve, aspire to do better, there's no end to improving. But at the end of the day, this is a squad that has everything required," he remarked.

He emphasized a crucial shift in approach for IPL 2026: moving from reliance on individual performances to cohesive team execution. "Now it's about coming together and performing as a unit, rather than as individuals. Last year, there were too many individuals performing. This year, we want to perform as a team," Goenka explained, highlighting the importance of collective effort in achieving their title ambitions.

IPL 2026 Schedule and LSG's Campaign Kickoff

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the schedule for the first phase of IPL 2026, running from March 28 to April 12. Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru will open the season against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

Lucknow Super Giants, led by captain Rishabh Pant, will commence their campaign against Delhi Capitals on April 1. Their initial fixtures include:

  • April 5: vs Sunrisers Hyderabad
  • April 9: vs Kolkata Knight Riders
  • April 12: vs Gujarat Titans

This early phase presents a critical opportunity for LSG to establish momentum and demonstrate the team unity Goenka advocates, as they pursue the elusive IPL trophy that he deems essential for respect and legacy.
