Shreyas Iyer Opens Up About Severe Spleen Injury and Weight Loss Ahead of IPL 2026
In a candid revelation ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, star batter Shreyas Iyer has detailed the physically and mentally taxing phase he endured following a serious spleen injury sustained during the Australia tour. The injury necessitated hospitalization and resulted in significant weight loss, presenting one of the toughest challenges of his cricketing career.
The Injury and Its Aftermath
Iyer described the injury as severe, forcing him into hospital care and leading to a dramatic loss of approximately 7 kilograms in body weight. "It's always challenging to come back after an injury," Iyer stated during a pre-season press conference. "I had lost around 7 kg due to the injury, it was a severe one. Thankfully, I was back in good shape after two months. But gaining those 7 kg back took a lot of effort."
The cricketer emphasized his resilience in facing this obstacle, noting, "I enjoy challenges, and that was one I had to overcome. I'm glad I came through that phase and am back representing my team, and also having represented India in the previous series. I feel proud of myself."
Road to Recovery and Return to Cricket
Despite this significant setback, Iyer demonstrated remarkable determination, working tirelessly to regain his fitness and return to competitive cricket. He resumed playing as the captain of Mumbai in domestic cricket, though his performances yielded mixed results, including a modest outing in an ODI series against New Zealand.
Reflecting on his recovery journey, Iyer reiterated, "It is always challenging to come back after an injury. I had lost around seven kilos, and it took a lot of effort to gain that weight back. But I love challenges. I am glad I overcame that part of my life, and I am back here proudly representing the team."
Focus on IPL 2026 and Leadership with Punjab Kings
Now, as the newly appointed leader of the Punjab Kings franchise, Iyer is channeling his full focus toward clinching the coveted IPL trophy. "Expectations are high, which is fun. I love the challenge," he declared. "But the important thing is that whenever we step in, we have to win. My eye is on the trophy."
Iyer also highlighted the importance of team cohesion and bonding off the field, stating, "This is the period where we live as a family for two months." He emphasized how spending quality time together enhances team performance and fosters a supportive environment.
Teammate Support and Positive Atmosphere
Echoing this positive energy, teammate Arshdeep Singh shared his perspective on handling pressure, remarking, "When you feel the pressure, it is a privilege." This sentiment underscores the collective mindset within the Punjab Kings camp as they gear up for the upcoming season.
Iyer's journey from injury-induced weight loss to reclaiming his spot and leadership role serves as an inspiring testament to perseverance in professional sports. With his sights set on IPL glory, the cricketer's story adds a compelling narrative to the anticipation surrounding IPL 2026.
