Sunil Gavaskar Criticizes RCB's Repeated Medical Interruptions in IPL Match
Legendary former India captain Sunil Gavaskar voiced significant frustration during commentary as Royal Challengers Bengaluru took three medical time-outs in the closing stages of their IPL 2026 encounter against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. The repeated stoppages during Mumbai's chase prompted Gavaskar to suggest that injured players should simply leave the field for treatment rather than repeatedly halting play.
Heat and Humidity Trigger Multiple Cramping Episodes
The incident unfolded during the 16th over of Mumbai Indians' innings when RCB pacer Rasikh Salam Dar appeared to struggle during his run-up before the first delivery. The extreme heat and humidity conditions in Mumbai seemed to trigger cramps, forcing him to call for the physio and creating a brief stoppage in play.
Although Rasikh quickly resumed his position, he experienced discomfort again after being hit for a six by Sherfane Rutherford off the very next ball. The physio returned to attend to his left leg, raising concerns about repeated delays and mounting over-rate pressure on the fielding side.
Gavaskar's On-Air Frustration Reaches Boiling Point
Despite these setbacks, Rasikh managed to strike back by dismissing Naman Dhir on the following delivery. However, he went down again later in the over after the fifth ball, once more due to cramping issues. This time, teammates Jitesh Sharma and captain Rajat Patidar stepped in to assist with stretching before the physio arrived for a third intervention.
The repeated interruptions clearly frustrated Gavaskar, who felt RCB should have adopted a different approach to managing the situation. "Just go off the field, get treatment, and then come back. Whatever it is, the remaining deliveries should be bowled by another bowler. But again, now this is what—the third time the physio has come in. Are we going to see the same thing over and over again?" he said emphatically during the broadcast.
Umpire Intervention and Bowling Changes
As Rasikh continued receiving treatment, on-field umpires were observed looking toward the RCB dugout where head coach Andy Flower was standing. Eventually, the decision was made to take the pacer off the field, with Romario Shepherd stepping in to complete the over.
Rasikh later returned before the final over, which captain Rajat Patidar initially wanted him to bowl. However, the umpires intervened and stopped that decision, pointing out that he was not yet eligible to bowl again as he had not spent sufficient time back on the field following his injury break. Shepherd was then handed the responsibility to finish the innings.
RCB Secures Victory Despite Controversial Stoppages
In the end, Royal Challengers Bengaluru held their nerve to secure an 18-run victory in a high-scoring contest at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. The win came despite the multiple medical interruptions that had drawn criticism from one of cricket's most respected voices.
The incident has sparked discussion about:
- The appropriate use of medical time-outs during critical match phases
- Player welfare versus maintaining game flow in challenging conditions
- Umpiring discretion in managing repeated stoppages
- Team strategies around injury management during IPL matches
This controversy highlights the ongoing tension between player health considerations and maintaining the pace and integrity of professional cricket matches, particularly during high-pressure situations in premier tournaments like the Indian Premier League.
