Chennai Super Kings (CSK) made headlines at last December's IPL mini auction by spending a staggering INR 14.2 crore each on fresh faces Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma. The duo became the joint-most-expensive uncapped Indian players ever signed at an IPL auction. This move signals a clear shift for a franchise long known for its 'dad's army' tag and stability.
A Shift in Strategy
Injuries have played a part, but the churn in the squad is hard to miss. Youngsters like Ayush Mhatre, Urvil Patel, Prashant Veer, and Kartik Sharma have all been given opportunities. The franchise is trading its signature settled core for long-term investment, betting that blooding these youth now will yield dividends for years to come.
Michael Hussey on Transition
CSK batting coach Michael Hussey acknowledged the team is in a phase of transition. "In a lot of ways, it's quite a new team," he said. "There are quite a few new players who have come in, some good young talent that we want to expose to games as well. Ideally, we'd love to settle on an 11 or 12 that we are very comfortable with and let those guys grow into their roles. Hopefully, we can string some form together and gain confidence to stick with that team."
Persisting with Kartik Sharma
This approach is evident in how they have persisted with 20-year-old Kartik Sharma. The wicketkeeper-batter has endured a lean run in his first five matches, but Hussey remains confident he is just one game away from finding his stride. "He's a great talent; I hope we see him at CSK for the next five to 10 years," Hussey said. "He is ambitious and wants to do well. We'd love to give him as much opportunity as possible and watch him grow into that CSK shirt."
CSK's investment in youth marks a new chapter for the franchise, blending experience with emerging talent to build a sustainable future.
