Cooper Connolly's Composed Knock Secures Punjab Kings' Tense Victory
In a thrilling encounter that kept fans on the edge of their seats, Punjab Kings secured a narrow three-wicket victory over Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2026 season. The match, held at New Chandigarh on Tuesday, was ultimately decided by a magnificent, match-winning innings from young Australian all-rounder Cooper Connolly.
Connolly Anchors Nervy Chase After Dramatic Collapse
Chasing a target of 163 runs, Punjab Kings appeared to be cruising toward victory during the early stages of their innings. Openers Prabhsimran Singh and Cooper Connolly established a dominant 76-run partnership that put the hosts firmly in control. The aggressive start was highlighted by Punjab hitting four sixes within the first four overs, contrasting sharply with Gujarat's total of just three maximums throughout their entire innings.
However, the momentum shifted dramatically when Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill introduced Prasidh Krishna as an impact player. The pace bowler delivered a stunning spell, claiming three crucial wickets in just ten deliveries. This triggered a dramatic middle-order collapse that saw Punjab lose four wickets for a mere eight runs, transforming what seemed like a comfortable chase into a tense finish.
"Such things happen in the IPL when you lose wickets back-to-back," admitted Punjab skipper Shreyas Iyer, acknowledging the pressure his team faced during the critical phase.
Youngster Shows Remarkable Maturity Under Pressure
Amid the chaos, 22-year-old Cooper Connolly displayed exceptional composure and maturity. Unfazed by the wickets falling around him, the young batter held his nerve and built crucial partnerships with Marco Jansen and Xavier Bartlett. Connolly remained unbeaten on 72 runs from just 44 deliveries, striking five boundaries and five sixes in his innings.
His performance included two particularly impressive sixes against world-class spinner Rashid Khan during the tense final overs. "To put that performance in tonight, very happy. I'm more of a tempo player," Connolly remarked after being deservedly named Player of the Match for his match-winning contribution.
Gujarat Titans Falter After Promising Start
Earlier in the match, Gujarat Titans posted a total of 162/6 after being asked to bat first. Captain Shubman Gill led from the front with a fluent 39 runs, while Jos Buttler contributed 38 runs to the total. The duo rebuilt the innings effectively after the early dismissal of Sai Sudharsan, who fell for just 13 runs.
Despite a promising Powerplay performance, Gujarat struggled to accelerate during the middle overs. Veteran spinner Yuzvendra Chahal turned the tide for Punjab by removing both Gill and Buttler in quick succession. Vijaykumar Vyshak also impressed with clever variations through the middle overs, maintaining pressure on the batting side.
Punjab's disciplined bowling attack restricted Gujarat to just 34 runs in the final five overs, leaving them with what proved to be an insufficient total on the challenging New Chandigarh pitch.

With Day 4 of the IPL 2026 season delivering another thrilling contest, cricket enthusiasts now turn their attention to Day 5. The upcoming match features Lucknow Super Giants taking on Delhi Capitals at the prestigious Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium.
