Bengaluru Police Unveil Major Safety Plan for IPL Matches at Chinnaswamy Stadium

With the Indian Premier League (IPL) season set to kick off on March 28 at the iconic M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru city police have rolled out a series of robust crowd management and safety measures. These initiatives are designed to ensure a smooth and hassle-free experience for all spectators, addressing past concerns and enhancing overall security.

Enhanced Public Transport and Entry Protocols

In a significant move to boost public transport, match tickets now include integrated Metro travel and vehicle parking. This arrangement results from a collaboration between the Karnataka State Cricket Association, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), and the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. Spectators can enjoy free Metro rides to and from the stadium by simply using their match tickets.

Officials have clarified that access to the stadium is available from both Cubbon Park Metro station and MG Road station. To manage the anticipated rush on match days, BMRCL has committed to running additional services, with trains scheduled every three minutes.

Joint commissioner of police (west) C Vamsi Krishna emphasized that gates will open four hours before match time, and spectators are strongly advised to arrive early. Entry has been streamlined with 28 wide entry points, each at least nine metres wide, primarily along Cubbon Road. The majority of the crowd will be directed through gates E1 to E5 for stands including A, B, P1, P1 Annexe, P3, D Corporate, and Executive areas. Gates E17, E18, and E19 lead to C, E, F, and H upper stands, with only pedestrians permitted on the link road.

To further reduce congestion, authorities have restricted access on Queens Road, allowing only players and holders of P2, P Corporate, and P Terrace passes through gates E8 and E10.

Ramped-Up Security and Crowd Monitoring

Security measures have been significantly enhanced, featuring around 500 CCTV cameras with real-time monitoring and AI-based crowd analytics installed around the stadium. These AI-powered systems will continuously monitor crowd density to prevent overcrowding and ensure safety.

Multiple agencies, including the Garuda Force, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), civil police, traffic police, and home guards, will be deployed to manage the event. Authorities have already conducted two mock drills, with another scheduled prior to the match day. The exact number of police personnel deployed will be announced following this final drill.

Police commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh urged fans to cooperate and "cheer responsibly," noting the stadium's limited capacity. He advised, "Enjoy the game wherever you are, but only those with valid tickets should come to the venue."

Background and Partnership Highlights

These measures come in the wake of a tragic stampede on June 4 last year, which resulted in 11 deaths during title celebrations for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). The new protocols aim to prevent such incidents and ensure a safer environment for all attendees.

In a related development, Nandini, the flagship brand of the Karnataka Milk Federation, has partnered with RCB as the official dairy partner for the IPL season. This collaboration brings together two prominent Karnataka-based brands with strong public connections. Chief minister Siddaramaiah highlighted this synergy in a post on X, stating, "The synergy between Nandini's trusted legacy and RCB's sporting excellence will be a key highlight of this IPL season."
