In a stunning reversal of fortunes, the SG Pipers have scripted a remarkable comeback story in the Women's Hockey India League (WHIL). After a forgettable previous season where they finished at the bottom with just a single regulation-time win, the team has now soared to the top of the table and is set to contest the final against the Shrachi Bengal Tigers this Saturday.
From Wooden Spoon to Table Toppers
The Pipers' journey to the summit was confirmed despite a 2-5 loss to Ranchi Royals in their final group match in Ranchi on Thursday. They concluded the league stage with 11 points from six matches, securing the top spot. This dramatic shift in performance is one of the season's most compelling narratives.
The Young Guns Rise to the Occasion
The cornerstone of this transformation has been the phenomenal performance of the team's young Indian talent. Players like Sunelita Toppo, Jyoti Singh, and Ishika stepped up magnificently, putting behind a challenging Junior World Cup campaign with India to shine on the WHIL stage.
"Not many people follow junior hockey, so this was a chance for us to show what we are capable of and perform alongside the overseas players," explained junior India captain Jyoti Singh. She highlighted learning from experienced defenders like Valentina Costa Biondi and Lola Reira.
Ishika, who scored twice at last year's Junior World Cup in Santiago, credited the team's environment for her growth. The belief shown by their coach has been instrumental in building their confidence on the field.
The Guiding Forces: Coach Gierts and Captain Navneet
Beyond the overseas recruits, the impact of coach Sofie Gierts has been profound. "As a player, it matters a lot how much trust the coach has in you. Sofie does that and it helped us to grow in confidence," Ishika noted.
Equally pivotal has been the role of India senior player and Pipers captain, Navneet Kaur. She provided crucial guidance and support both on and off the pitch, acting as a mentor to the budding stars.
"As a junior you can be good, but you need someone to push you. Especially after making mistakes, you start doubting yourself. This is where the seniors use their experience to guide us," Jyoti Singh elaborated.
This mentorship bore clear fruit. Sunelita Toppo, absorbing Navneet's advice on game reading and timing, scored two excellent goals in the tournament. "Navneet di kept telling me to read the situation better... I was finally able to do it successfully during the match against Soorma," said the Odisha-born player.
Navneet Kaur, who scored both goals in Thursday's match, expressed pride in the youngsters' development. "They have improved a lot since last year. We keep telling them to play freely, concentrate on their game," she stated.
The collective support system has instilled immense belief in the SG Pipers squad. Their dramatic season turnaround is now one match away from the ultimate prize. All eyes will be on whether this newfound confidence can propel them to lift the WHIL trophy on Saturday.
