PAU Hockey Stadium's Old Astroturf Awaits Relocation Despite Plans
Old PAU Hockey Turf Unattended, Relocation Delayed

Old Astroturf at PAU Hockey Stadium Remains Unattended in Ludhiana

Despite recent weather conditions in Ludhiana city and a prolonged waiting period, the old astroturf at the hockey stadium located at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) continues to lie unattended. The turf is still awaiting relocation to a safer place where it can be reused effectively. This delay has raised concerns about the potential waste of valuable sports infrastructure that could benefit athletes and students across the region.

Planned Distribution Faces Implementation Hurdles

The original plan involved dividing the old turf into four distinct parts to maximize its utility. Two sections were designated for Ludhiana itself—one for a college in Bondli and another for the School of Eminence in Mundian Kalan. Additionally, one part each was allocated for Barnala and Sangrur districts. However, this well-intentioned strategy has encountered significant delays, preventing the turf from being put back into use for practice sessions for an extended period.

Despite all the careful planning and coordination efforts, the old astroturf now remains exposed to the elements in an open area. This situation highlights the challenges in executing infrastructure recycling projects, even when they are designed to enhance sports facilities at the grassroots level.

Renovation and Recycling Initiatives by Authorities

To provide better facilities for athletes, hockey players, and students, the PAU hockey stadium underwent a renovation process that included the installation of a brand new astroturf. As part of this upgrade, the old turf was removed from the stadium. The Punjab State Sports Council (PSSC) spearheaded a project aimed at recycling the old turf by distributing parts of it to various schools and colleges across the state of Punjab.

This initiative was intended to promote sports development and ensure that existing resources are utilized efficiently, rather than being discarded. The project reflects a broader commitment to improving sports infrastructure and supporting young talent in the region.

Tender Process and Official Statements on Delays

For the re-installation of the old astroturf, the concerned authorities initiated a tender process to select contractors for the relocation work. However, this process has faced setbacks, as officials from the sports department have reported receiving only two entries so far. This limited response has contributed to the ongoing delays in moving the turf to its intended destinations.

When questioned about the situation, XEN Punjab State Sports Council Sanjay Mahajan provided insights into the current status. He stated, "The tender process was initiated and we have received only two entries so far. We are currently checking the paper work and experience of the ones who have filed for this project. Once it is done, the turf is expected to reach the final place, this may take a time of 15-20 days."

Mahajan further addressed concerns about the weather conditions, noting, "The weather conditions might affect the turf as it will be there in the open. I will direct the team concerned to relocate the turf and ensure that it is done as soon as possible." His comments underscore the urgency of protecting the turf from potential damage due to exposure and expediting the relocation process to fulfill the planned distribution.
