Coach Marijne Backs Youth in India Women's Hockey Team for Crucial World Cup Qualifiers
In his first press conference since assuming leadership of the India women's national hockey team earlier this year, coach Sjoerd Marijne expressed high praise for the young talent emerging in the camp. The Dutch tactician emphasized his satisfaction with the pool of players, stating, "I am very happy with the talent, selected six from juniors and the clear reason is their performance." This confidence in youth has translated directly into team selection for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
New Faces Annu and Ishika Bring Junior Success to Senior Squad
Marijne has named two notable new faces in the squad for the World Cup qualifiers, scheduled in Hyderabad from March 8 to 14. Annu, hailing from Haryana, has been a standout performer in junior competitions. She played a pivotal role during the 2023 Junior Asia Cup in Kakamigahara, Japan, scoring an impressive 9 goals in just 5 games. Additionally, she contributed 7 goals in six matches at the 2023 Junior World Cup, showcasing her scoring prowess.
Ishika, who operates as a forward, also brings valuable experience from the junior circuit. She netted two goals during the Junior World Cup held in Santiago, Chile, in December last year. Her credentials were further bolstered by participation in the Hockey India League (HIL), where she played for the eventual champions SG Pipers, gaining exposure to high-level competition.
Key Absences and Strategic Adjustments in the Squad
The team will navigate the qualifiers without some familiar names. Savita, a key player, is unavailable for selection, necessitating a shift in goalkeeping duties. Bansari Solanki and Bichu Devi Kharibam will step up to handle these responsibilities in her absence, bringing their own skills to the forefront.
Deepika, a young forward and dragflicker who impressed during the Asian Champions Trophy in 2024 in Rajgir, is also absent from the initial lineup due to an injury sustained ahead of last year's Asia Cup. However, she has traveled with the team and could feature later in the tournament if she passes a fitness test, adding potential depth as the competition progresses.
Comebacks and Leadership in a Revitalized Team
Several other changes mark this squad, including the comeback of Sushila Chanu. After missing the Asia Cup due to a recurring knee injury, her return bolsters the team's defensive options. Salima Tete will continue to lead the side as captain, with hopes high for her to regain top form following recent struggles. The blend of experienced players and fresh talent aims to create a dynamic and competitive unit.
In preparation for the tournament, the team will play two practice matches before their opener against Uruguay next Sunday. Coach Marijne expressed confidence in his squad's readiness, noting in a release, "We are really looking forward to our first tournament together. We have been working on the fitness and the tactics, so everybody understands their tasks and role in the team." This focused approach underscores the team's determination to secure qualification for the World Cup.
