Indian Hockey Umpire Raghu Prasad Honoured with Global Accolade
In a moment of immense pride for Indian sports, veteran umpire Raghu Prasad was declared the International Hockey Federation's (FIH) Male Umpire of the Year on Tuesday. This prestigious award recognises his outstanding contributions and performance on the international stage.
A Career Defined by Consistency and Excellence
The FIH Umpiring Committee selected Prasad for this honour, lauding his remarkable 23-year international career. The world governing body highlighted that his journey has been defined by consistency, resilience, and excellence. In a statement, the FIH explained that while in Olympic and World Cup years the award is purely performance-based, in other years like 2025, it can also acknowledge an official's broader, long-term impact on hockey umpiring.
An emotional Prasad reacted to the news, stating, "Today is one of the most special moments of my career. When I look back at the long hours, sacrifices and challenges, this recognition feels deeply rewarding."
From Bangalore to the World Stage
Hailing from Bangalore, Prasad's path to umpiring stardom was unconventional. He initially dreamed of becoming a doctor and played hockey only recreationally. His foray into officiating began around 1999-2000, starting with school, college, and local league tournaments.
His big break came in 2003 with his international debut. Since then, his career has been nothing short of spectacular. Prasad has officiated at every major tournament, including four World Cups and three Olympic Games, across all continents. His extensive portfolio also includes the FIH Pro League, Commonwealth Games, Junior World Cups, and major Asian tournaments like three Asian Games, multiple Asia Cups, and Asian Champions Trophies.
On the Verge of a Historic Milestone
The FIH also highlighted an impending historic achievement for the Indian official. With 198 international umpiring caps and 33 video umpire appointments to his name, Prasad is on the cusp of a monumental feat.
He is set to become the first-ever Asian umpire to officiate in 200 international matches at the upcoming 2025 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia. The FIH praised his enduring success, attributing it to his exceptional fitness, sharp decision-making, and leadership on the field. His professionalism and humility have earned him immense respect globally.
As he nears the conclusion of his illustrious career, the federation noted that Raghu Prasad's impact continues to inspire a new generation of officials dedicated to upholding the integrity and spirit of hockey.
