Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey Champions National Tribal Team for Grassroots Development
Hockey India President and former Olympian Dilip Kumar Tirkey has strongly advocated for the inclusion of tribal youth in hockey, endorsing the formation of a national tribal team to foster talent and expand the sport's reach at the grassroots level. Speaking in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, Tirkey emphasized that such initiatives are crucial for providing exposure and igniting passion among tribal children, potentially shaping future stars for the country.
Khelo India Tribal Games: A Historic Platform for Tribal Athletes
Chhattisgarh is set to host the inaugural edition of the Khelo India Tribal Games (KITG) from Wednesday, marking a significant milestone in Indian sports. The event will see participation from thirty states and Union Territories, featuring nine sports with medals awarded in archery, athletics, football, hockey, swimming, weightlifting, and wrestling. Traditional sports like mallakhamb and kabaddi will be showcased as demonstration events, attracting close to 3,800 participants until April 3.
The Games will be held across three cities: Raipur, Jagdalpur, and Sarguja. Tirkey hailed this championship as a proud first for India, offering a robust platform for youth, especially tribal players, to display their talents and advance in sports. He noted that it aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of transforming India into a sporting nation by encouraging all youngsters to engage in physical activities.
Emphasis on Gender Neutrality and Regional Representation
In keeping with the Olympic charter, the Khelo India Tribal Games will maintain gender neutrality, with a nearly 50:50 distribution of male and female athletes. A total of 106 gold medals will be at stake, with athletics offering the maximum of 34 golds. Other sports with double-digit gold medals include swimming (24), wrestling (18), weightlifting (16), and archery (10). Hockey and football, the two team games, will be contested in Raipur, while athletics will take place in Jagdalpur, and wrestling in Sarguja.
Host state Chhattisgarh, along with Odisha, Jharkhand, and Assam, will have the largest representation, each fielding over 100 athletes. This highlights the regional enthusiasm and commitment to nurturing tribal talent through such national events.
Tirkey's Vision for Tribal Youth in Hockey
Dilip Tirkey, in his conversation with ANI, underscored the potential of a national tribal team to inspire and develop players from underserved communities. "It will be a good initiative to give exposure to tribal children. It will be a good thing if they form a National tribal team so that the children get even more interested and passionate... Many more players will come up in the future," he stated. His remarks resonate with the broader goal of the Khelo India Tribal Games to build careers in sports for tribal communities, as echoed by other sports stars like hockey Olympian Salima Tete and top sprinter Animesh Kujur.
This initiative not only aims to identify and groom talent but also to promote inclusivity and diversity in Indian sports, paving the way for a more robust athletic ecosystem.
