From School Defender to WHIL Champion: Bansari Solanki's Unlikely Goalkeeper Journey
Bansari Solanki: How Height Led to Hockey Goalkeeper Success

An Unexpected Path to the Goal

Bansari Solanki started playing hockey as a teenager with simple intentions. She never imagined guarding the net. Her journey began on the field as a defender.

A Tall Decision Changes Everything

Her school team faced a problem during the under-14 championships. They lacked a goalkeeper. Bansari stood taller than all the other girls in her group. Her sports teacher saw an opportunity.

"Since I was the tallest amongst all the girls in our group, my sports teacher just made me a goalkeeper," Bansari recalls with a laugh. What started as necessity turned into destiny.

From Surat to Championship Glory

The 24-year-old from Surat initially chose hockey out of curiosity. As a child, she dreamed of becoming an astronaut. She even completed a Bachelor of Business Administration, showing her studious nature.

Last weekend, her goalkeeping skills proved crucial for SG Pipers. She delivered brilliant saves during penalty shootouts against Bengal Tigers. Her performance secured the Women's Hockey India League title for her team.

The tournament recognized her excellence with the Goalkeeper of the Tournament award. This marked a significant milestone in her evolving career.

Guidance from an Olympic Mentor

Olympian Romeo James played a major role in shaping Bansari's development. In late 2017, James took her under his wing at the National Hockey Academy in Delhi. He spent six years honing her abilities.

"She was always a keen learner, used to ask lots of questions and was eager to work hard from the beginning," James remembers. He encouraged her to write down coaching points, which she did diligently.

James, part of the silver medal-winning team at the 1982 Asian Games, focused first on her physical training. "At first, we worked on her physical abilities so that she could be quick," he explains. Practicing with boys' teams helped her handle harder shots.

The WHIL Experience and Future Dreams

Bansari describes her WHIL journey as spectacular and magical. She cherished the bond within SG Pipers. Playing alongside Argentine goalkeeper Cristina Cosentino represented a high point.

Coaching from Sophie Gierts made the experience particularly special. "The way she has carried this team, the way she gave us opportunities and the way she has shown faith and belief, I think that's what led us to the championship," Bansari emphasizes.

While she made her international debut last year, Bansari knows she must continue proving herself for a regular spot on the senior national team. The WHIL experience boosted her confidence significantly.

She remains clear about her goals and looks forward to future opportunities. Her story shows how unexpected beginnings can lead to remarkable achievements in sports.
