Sporting Club Delhi Marks Historic Homecoming After Seven-Year Football Void
On a bright Tuesday morning at the Northern United Football Club facilities in Delhi-NCR, the atmosphere was electric with anticipation. Players engaged in rigorous warm-up drills, goalkeepers faced powerful shots, and coaches meticulously oversaw training sessions. This was no ordinary practice; it was the final preparations for a monumental event in Indian football history.
Delhi's Football Legacy and the Seven-Year Hiatus
Delhi once proudly hosted three clubs in India's top two divisions: Delhi Dynamos in the Indian Super League (ISL), alongside Sudeva Delhi and Delhi FC in the I-League, now known as the Indian Football League. The Dynamos, in particular, left an indelible mark, drawing average crowds exceeding 15,000 during the inaugural 2014 ISL season and featuring football legends like Alessandro Del Piero and Roberto Carlos.
However, Delhi's top-tier football journey came to an abrupt halt in February 2019 when the Dynamos rebranded as Odisha FC and relocated to Bhubaneswar ahead of the 2019-20 season. While I-League clubs continued to represent the capital, the absence of an ISL team created a significant void that lasted for seven long years.
The Emotional Return to JLN Stadium
This void finally ends on Thursday, March 19, as Sporting Club Delhi, formerly Hyderabad FC, hosts Jamshedpur FC at the iconic Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. For 19-year-old defender Akshat Mehra, who was part of the Delhi Dynamos youth setup and now represents SC Delhi, this homecoming is deeply personal.
"I'm extremely happy that football is finally back in Delhi after such a long time," Mehra expressed after a training session in Noida. "Last time it was Delhi Dynamos, and thankfully I was part of that too. Now, being with SC Delhi feels incredible because it's my home club, and I get to represent my city. It's a truly special feeling."
Mehra, who recently helped Delhi win the U-20 national championship, acknowledges the heightened expectations. "It's a great feeling but also a bigger responsibility. It won't be easy, but we're prepared as a team. For Delhi, it's time to step up—there's no turning back now. We hope to make our fans proud and do great things for the city," he added.
Team's Current Form and Home Advantage
Nicknamed The Phoenix, SC Delhi hopes this home stretch will reverse their fortunes in a challenging season. After four matches in the truncated campaign, they sit second from bottom with one draw and three losses, only slightly ahead of Mohammedan Sporting, who have yet to earn a point.
The season began with a 0-2 loss in Bengaluru, followed by a 1-4 defeat to East Bengal, a narrow 0-1 loss against FC Goa, and a spirited comeback from 0-2 down to secure a 2-2 draw with Mumbai City FC for their first points. After extensive travel across India, this home game offers a much-needed respite following a 10-day break.
Coach's Vision and Fan Engagement
Polish coach Tomasz Tchorz, with experience at ATK Mohun Bagan and Kerala Blasters, emphasizes the importance of fan support. "There is always additional support, so we're counting on them to come in big numbers. They'll be loud in the stadium and motivate our players. Fans are like the 12th player, and we're eagerly waiting for that," he said.
Tchorz sees Delhi's diversity as an opportunity. "This is challenging but very interesting in a city like Delhi, the capital, which is big and versatile with many communities and foreign residents. Our team can represent different communities and unite them. We can create a big family rich in cultures, languages, and religions, united through football," he explained.
Club's Initiatives to Draw Crowds
To ensure a memorable inaugural home game, SC Delhi has implemented several fan-friendly measures. The club has invited school children, offered free tickets, and collaborated with social media influencers to promote the event. Club CEO Dhruv Sood reported an "overwhelming" response.
"We launched tickets Friday night and have had an overwhelming response above our expectations. The first game is an inaugural offer. The ownership wanted people to experience ISL and football in Delhi, so it's free for all attendees. Tickets are still available as we want young Delhi residents to come and see football," Sood stated.
He added optimistically, "My hope is for 10-11,000 people, which would be a good number. Hopefully, many will wear red and support us, and the team will respond with the first win of the season."
As Delhi prepares to welcome top-tier football back after seven years, the stage is set for a historic celebration at JLN Stadium, marking a new chapter in the capital's sporting legacy.
