Rajasthan United FC's Unbeaten Streak Snapped by Sreenidhi Deccan in Hyderabad Clash
The impressive five-match unbeaten run of Rajasthan United Football Club (RUFC) came to an abrupt halt on Sunday as they suffered a narrow 1-2 defeat against Sreenidhi Deccan at the Deccan Arena in Hyderabad. This eighth and penultimate match of the Indian Football League (IFL) saw the Jaipur-based side fall just short despite a valiant effort, particularly after being reduced to ten men in the second half.
Early Lead and Resilient Response
The hosts, Sreenidhi Deccan, seized an early advantage with a goal from Brandon Vanlalremdika, putting Rajasthan United FC on the back foot from the outset. However, the Desert Warriors demonstrated remarkable discipline and intent, refusing to let the early setback define the match. Their persistence paid off in the 77th minute when Issac Nortey found the back of the net, reducing the deficit and injecting renewed energy into the contest.
Following the goal, RUFC maintained relentless attacking pressure in search of an equaliser, showcasing a structured and resilient approach in the final phases of the game. This period highlighted their tactical acumen and fighting spirit, even as the match grew increasingly demanding.
Numerical Disadvantage and Decisive Strike
The contest took a dramatic turn in the second half with the dismissal of Shafeel PP, which left Rajasthan United FC with only ten men on the field. Despite this significant numerical disadvantage, the team remained exceptionally organised and continued to compete effectively, a testament to their character and coaching.
However, Sreenidhi Deccan capitalised on their extra player advantage, sealing the victory with a decisive strike just seven minutes from full-time. Lalthankhuma received the ball at the edge of the box and, with minimal backlift, unleashed a powerful shot that caught RUFC goalkeeper and captain Bhabindra Malla Thakuri off guard, finding the net to secure a 2-1 win.
League Standings and Post-Match Reactions
This result marked Sreenidhi Deccan's fourth victory of the season, propelling them to the second spot in the IFL standings with 15 points from eight matches. Rajasthan United FC, meanwhile, sit just below in third place with 14 points. Importantly, both teams have clinched a place in the Super Six phase with one round remaining, setting the stage for an intense second round of matches.
RUFC head coach Vikrant Sharma expressed disappointment with the outcome but praised his team's effort. "While the result is not in our favour, the overall application and commitment shown by the players were commendable. Competing with ten men for a significant period and still remaining in contention highlights the team's character. We will review the key moments and focus on improving ahead of the next fixture," Sharma stated in a post-match interview.
Echoing this sentiment, RUFC chairman KK Tak acknowledged the hard-fought nature of the contest. "It was a hard-fought contest, and while the outcome was disappointing, the fighting spirit shown by the team, especially under difficult circumstances, was encouraging. We believe in the team and are confident they will respond strongly in the upcoming matches," Tak remarked.
Looking Ahead
Rajasthan United FC now shifts its focus to the upcoming match on April 19 against Dempo Sporting Club at the Fatorda Stadium in Goa. The club has expressed gratitude to its supporters for their unwavering encouragement and remains determined to deliver a strong response in the next outing, aiming to bounce back from this setback and make a mark in the Super Six phase.
This match not only highlighted the competitive nature of the IFL but also underscored the resilience and tactical prowess of both teams as they prepare for the crucial stages of the season.
