AIFF Navigates Complex Fixture Challenge Ahead of ISL Kickoff
The All India Football Federation faces a significant logistical hurdle as it prepares for the upcoming Indian Super League season. With the league scheduled to begin on February 14, the federation must balance fixtures while several clubs struggle with home venue availability.
Fixture Uncertainty Persists
Less than one month before the league starts, officials had not finalized the match schedule. A working group comprising ISL club representatives and AIFF officials created draft fixtures. They presented these plans to participating clubs for approval on Sunday.
The initial draft proposed Mohun Bagan Super Giant and East Bengal playing the opening match. However, both clubs expressed reluctance to start their campaign with the intense Kolkata Derby.
Stadium Availability Issues Widespread
A senior official explained the complexity of the situation. "Confirming fixtures proves difficult with multiple stadiums unavailable," the official stated. "Only three clubs currently have their home stadiums ready for the entire season."
The official identified Mohun Bagan, East Bengal, and FC Goa as the clubs with fully available home venues. For other teams, uncertainty surrounds ground readiness and playing conditions.
Multiple Factors Disrupt Venue Plans
Various events and maintenance problems affect stadium availability across the country:
- NorthEast United's home ground in Guwahati hosts Prime Minister Narendra Modi and will accommodate a CRPF event next month
- Major musical concerts occupy venues in Chennai and Delhi
- Political meetings further complicate scheduling at several locations
Club-Specific Challenges Emerge
Kerala Blasters face uncertainty about their Kochi home ground. Work remains incomplete at Nehru Stadium, and the turf does not meet playing standards. The club has explored alternative venues in Kozhikode and Malappuram, with EMS Corporation Stadium emerging as the most likely option.
Chennaiyin FC informed organizers they can only host matches after March 8. NorthEast United anticipates readiness from March 15 onward.
Additional Scheduling Complications
Punjab and Delhi's shared home stadium in the capital faces multiple blackout periods:
- February 13 to March 8
- March 20 to March 28
- April 2 to April 28
New Format Adds Pressure
The league introduces a single-leg format this season, requiring 91 matches between February 14 and May 31. Each team will play 13 matches, with approximately half at home venues and half away. This condensed schedule increases pressure on fixture planning amid venue constraints.
The AIFF continues working to resolve these challenges before the season begins. Federation officials maintain communication with clubs and venue operators to find practical solutions for all parties involved.
