ISL Club Owners Propose Working Committee for Transparent Commercial Rights Talks

In a significant development, owners of Indian Super League (ISL) clubs have put forward a proposal to establish a club working committee. This committee, comprising owners and key decision-makers, aims to engage with the All India Football Federation (AIFF) in a structured and transparent manner to secure the best long-term commercial rights for the league.

Unified Effort for Sustainable Framework

A letter signed by 13 out of 14 club owners, with Inter Kashi being the exception, outlines the group's intent to create a platform for exchanging ideas, identifying common ground, and developing a balanced, sustainable, and mutually beneficial framework. The clubs emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to address commercial rights issues effectively.

Proposed Committee Members

The clubs have nominated three owners to lead the committee: Bhavesh Jindal or Dhruv Sood from SC Delhi, Nikhil Nimmagadda from Kerala Blasters, and Rohan Sharma from Odisha FC. Additional representatives include:

  • Ekansh Gupta, Vice President of Chennaiyin FC
  • Darren Caldeira, CEO of Bengaluru FC
  • Vinay Chopra, Director of Mohun Bagan SG

Timing and Context of the Proposal

This proposal was sent to AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey, coming just two days after the federation formed the ISL Governing Council and requested the remaining six clubs to submit their representatives by Friday. Interestingly, the AIFF's move followed an online meeting of all club owners a day earlier, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

Concerns Over Commercial Rights Process

The club owners felt compelled to unite as the AIFF appears inclined to accept a bid from Genius Sports, a London-based company, for the ISL's commercial rights over a 15+5 year period. Genius Sports has offered an annual bid of Rs 64.4 crore, totaling approximately Rs 2,130 crore over 20 years with a five percent annual increment, pending approval from the general body.

The clubs have expressed dissatisfaction with the current rights process, stressing the importance of engaging with all stakeholders to ensure a fair and transparent outcome. This initiative underscores their commitment to fostering a collaborative environment for the league's future growth and sustainability.
